Nature of Work

Application review will be conducted as determined by the Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority (MVRDA).

Performs installation, maintenance and modification of MVRDAs radio and telecommunications systems. Participates in the maintenance of microwave networks as they converge with the County-wide communications system, MVRDA base stations and handheld radio. This position will implement changes as directed. This position must be able to organize and look ahead to troubleshoot operational hazards so that the operation of MVRDA will continue to excel.

PHYSICAL FACTORS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be in good physical condition with the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb, stoop, bend, twist, stretch, squat, crouch, crawl, and occasionally lift 100 pounds. Must be able to pull his/her own weight plus equipment weight. The employee must be able to operate specific office equipment, and move about the work environment, including remote job sites. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close/distance vision, the ability to adjust focus and the ability to distinguish colors.

Position involves competing demands such as strict deadlines, multiple tasks, exposure to confidential crime information and required overtime. The ability to be on-call 24 hours a day for the success of the operation.

ENVIRONMENT FACTORS: Essential duties performed indoors and outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions. Field work is required. Employee will work odd hours in emergency situations, and be on-call on a rotating basis, including nights and weekends. Physical hazards include falls, lightning, electricity with risk of electrical shock, radiation, contact with wildlife, possible high winds, dust storms and wind-blown debris while working.

Position is subject to drug screening, hearing examination and a criminal background investigation in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority policies.

Fulltime, regular, non-exempt position with the Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority (MVRDA).

Fulltime, regular positions are eligible for MVRDA sponsored benefits.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Participate in periodic inspections, inventory, maintenance and upgrading of MVRDA radio sites, communication systems, equipment, buildings and antennas.
  2. Troubleshoot, perform maintenance and repairs to MVRDA radio sites, communication systems, equipment, buildings and antennas.
  3. Visit sites in response to service requests, to diagnose equipment problems and determine needed repair of base stations, electronic equipment, infrastructure and peripherals.
  4. Service antennas, radios and repair cabling/connectors.
  5. Coordinate with other government agencies and emergency services related to radio services and interoperability.
  6. Coordinate with outside vendors to provide additional radio-related services and suppo t.
  7. Design, examine and test new systems to evaluate effectiveness with existing systems.
  8. Provide back-up services to other MVRDA IT positions.

Other duties as assigned by the MVRDA Directors.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION:

High school diploma or equivalent. Electronics Technician certificate preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

Two years experience in electronics, alarm, access control, two-way communications, telephone or radio system design/installation/repair including repeaters and control stations, voting receivers and comparator systems, linking of system components by hard wire using RJ45 and RJ10, microwave, RF link and fiber optics.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS:

Must have a valid unrestricted drivers license. General two-way radio/telephone technician or amateur radio operators license preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of radio communications systems utilizing microwave, UHF/VHF, 700MHz and 800MHz; FCC rules and regulations; FAA regulations; business English and grammar; basic mathematics; records management; and system design, installation and maintenance. Low voltage electronics and wiring.

Skilled in installation, maintenance and repair of systems; performing analysis and design.

Ability to communicate effectively; establish and maintain effective working relations; read electronics service manuals; and prioritize workload.
