This Aquatic Research Section provides Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), Parks and Wildlife Commission, and other state and federal agencies new knowledge, concepts, theories, and models that can be used to enhance, preserve, and protect aquatic wildlife and their habitats by conducting sound scientific research statewide on aquatic wildlife populations, communities, and ecosystems, and users of those resources.
This Section addresses critical ecological concerns about species and/or develops new methods, techniques, or systems to assess, maintain, enhance, and monitor the status of Colorado’s aquatic wildlife while synthesizing existing information, producing new information/knowledge/theory/models, and interprets information and facilitates integrating information into agency programs, policy and agency decisions that affect native, non-native and threatened and endangered aquatic organisms and their habitats. Programs and services include research, analysis, and reporting on these species, their habitats, disease risks, and other factors influencing policy, management decisions, and sustainability of these populations.
Description of Job
The position designs and conducts original scientific research that is of management priority to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) and of such quality and rigor as to be suitable for publication in established peer-reviewed scientific journals applicable to aquatic wildlife management and conservation. The position develops new knowledge by testing scientific hypotheses and/or by testing new methodologies or models. The position facilitates incorporation of scientific information into CPW management programs and decision processes and serves as an agency expert for the assigned taxa of species. The position manages all aspects of the research process including problem identification, scientific design, implementation of study plan objectives, developing and managing a budget, supervising support personnel, and communicating results of research via oral and written communications/publications to CPW, DNR and wildlife management professionals. This position will conduct research on the ecology of lotic and lentic aquatic systems in Colorado as CPW and DNR priorities dictate. In particular, this position will focus on conducting research associated with population genetics of aquatic species of interest and enhancing the analyses and interpretation of population genetics data collected by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Aquatic Research Section (ARS). The person occupying this position should have demonstrated skills and abilities to conduct field and laboratory research at multiple spatial scales to address questions that are socially and politically controversial. As Lead Investigator the person occupying this position will be expected to conduct research collaboratively with other scientists to be successful. Finally, the person occupying the position will be expected to have strong knowledge in population genetics techniques and analyses, including the use of Bayesian statistical methods. This individual, with a high degree of proficiency in population modeling and genetic methods, will serve as the CPW subject-matter expert for aquatic studies related to these topics. Specific tasks include:
Design research projects and programmatic plans Designs research projects using the most appropriate experimental, analytical, and scientifically rigorous approaches available to test ecological hypotheses or to develop new methods commensurate with management needs and priorities of Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Develops long-term plans that identify anticipated future research needs pertinent to their taxa of expertise.
Conduct Research
Completes designed research projects by implementing, supervising, and being responsible for all aspects of day-to-day work schedules, methods, personnel supervision, data acquisition, database management, and data analysis.
Communicate and Publish Research Results
Provides periodic written progress reports and oral communications to Colorado Parks and Wildlife personnel and professional peers to inform these groups of significance and application of ongoing research results and to elicit input for improving research outputs. Publishes final results of research projects in a timely manner in peer-reviewed scientific journals appropriate to wildlife management and conservation.
Support agency policy, develop programs and maintain scientific expertise
Provides an assessment of available scientific information and helps integrate that information into CPW and DNR policy, decisions, and program development to improve the scientific basis for wildlife management in Colorado. Serves as a source of expert knowledge and advice for CPW wildlife management programs. Maintain scientific expertise for assigned taxa and ecological subject matter by: routinely reading peer-reviewed scientific literature; communicating with scientific peers in other states and countries; attending seminars, workshops, and professional meetings; and participating in relevant formal educational opportunities.
Supervise temporary employees/ graduate students, prepare and monitor budgets
Recruits, trains, and supervises all temporary or graduate students associated with assigned research projects and adheres to State of Colorado hiring and supervising guidelines. Provides temporary employees with professional advice and evaluations of their performance to aid in the development and recruitment of new individuals into the profession of aquatic resource management and research. Prepares all aspects of research project operational budgets under guidelines established by the Aquatic Research Leader. Routinely monitors status of expenditures to assure compliance with budgetary limits, economic efficiencies, and State purchasing procedures.

OR
A combination of related education in Fisheries Science, Biology, Natural Resources or another field of study related to the work assignment and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to seven (7) years
Substitutions
- Additional appropriate experience will substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis. Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Current or former State experience relevant to this position
Current or former Colorado Parks & Wildlife work or volunteer experience
Ph.D in Fisheries Science or related field is preferred
Applicants with strong peer-reviewed publication records
Conditions of Employment
Must be a State of Colorado resident at the time of application.

Overnight and extended travel for field work is expected
