The Product Development Director / ECLS R&D Therapy Leader is a member of the Cardiac Surgery R&D Staff, responsible for leading the ECLS (Extracorporeal Life Support) R&D organization in our Dexter (MI) facility, and reporting to the VP of CS R&D. The ECLS portfolio is a strategic growth driver for Cardiac Surgery and provides a key platform to the overall Cardiac Surgery operating unit.

The Product Development Director / ECLS R&D Therapy Leader is a member of the Cardiac Surgery R&D Staff, responsible for leading the ECLS (Extracorporeal Life Support) R&D organization in our Dexter (MI) facility, and reporting to the VP of CS R&D. The ECLS portfolio is a strategic growth driver for Cardiac Surgery and provides a key platform to the overall Cardiac Surgery operating unit.

This role combines functional leadership responsibilities, with strategic innovation/ therapy leadership of our ECLS (Extracorporeal Life Support) portfolio. This position will manage multiple technologies within the ECLS platform (i.e., disposable and capital equipment), while continuously seeking innovation in data, analytics, information sharing, and best practices, while focusing on design quality improvement initiatives, as well as defining a cadence of innovative products to bring meaningful benefits to patients, geographies, and the business. Additionally, this person will lead their team to execute product development, maintenance and product design excellence / initiatives, team effectiveness and coaching, and continuous improvement. This leader will also be responsible for transitioning the team to the Medtronic Product Development Process, including Design Controls and business procedures, as well as incorporation of the Design Reliability Manufacturability (DRM) strategy.

As the ECLS R&D Therapy leader, this role requires extensive communication with internal and external stakeholders, managing strategic discussions and negotiations with medical advisors and commercial leaders. This effort is key for Cardiac Surgery strategic cadence and involves continuous updates and reporting to the CS OU Sr Leadership team. The role will also be responsible for maintaining state-of-the art levels of technology including- continued innovative of the ECLS cannula and oxygenator platforms, updated integrated features to the circulatory console system, enhanced system reliability and continue support of commercially released products.

The Cardiac Surgery Operating Unit develops life-restoring therapies and healthcare solutions that span the care continuum; integrating technologies and applying clinical and economic evidence to increase patient access, improve efficiency of procedures and deliver successful patient outcomes.

This position is in Dexter, MI. within the Cardiac Surgery (CS) Operating Unit and requires on-site presence a minimum of four (4) days a week.

A Day in the Life

In general, the following responsibilities apply for the Product Development Director role. This includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Leads R&D functional team to evaluate, develop and manage new product development and ongoing lifecycle management.

  • Serves as liaison between ECLS PMO/ CTL, project team, and management.

  • Reviews status of projects and budgets; manages schedules and prepares status reports.

  • Develops mechanisms for monitoring project progress and for intervention and problem solving with project managers and cross functional managers.

  • Reviews requirements, planning, requirements elicitation and requirements management to ensure they meet demands of project’s key stakeholders.

  • Communicates with stakeholders, obtains stakeholder engagement to ensure the end products or processes will solve the business problems. (or “end products or processes that are aligned with the business’ strategy”)

  • Oversees the project through the different phases, from ideation to viability assessment, development, clinical evaluation, regulatory cycle, market launch and post launch market evaluation.

  • Represents the project/products in terms of status update and strategic fit for the company in front of a multitude of internal stakeholders (i.e., development, marketing, executives, regions, etc.) and external stakeholders (i.e., FDA, TuV, etc)

Qualifications –

Must Have - Minimum Requirements

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS ROLE, PLEASE BE SURE THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS ARE EVIDENT ON YOUR RESUME

  • Bachelor’s degree required in engineering or technical discipline

  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience with 10 years of functional (people) managerial experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 13 years relevant experience, minimum of 10 years of functional (people) managerial experience

Nice to Have

  • Fiscal responsibility of budgets, planning and expenditures.

  • Medical Device Industry experience.

  • Familiarity with these regulations: FDA 21 CFR Part 820 cGMP, ISO 13485, ISO 10012, and ISO 17025.

  • Mechanical or electromechanical background. MBA or advanced engineering or technical degree

  • Experience with ECMO/ECLS or blood circulatory pump designs.

  • Familiar with EMC Safety testing, IEC, RTCA standards.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and work cooperatively as part of a team and cross functionally.

  • Quality experience working in a regulated industry.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) and Windows OS.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):190,400.00 - 285,600.00

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
