Job Description

The employee in this position performs a diverse range of administrative support tasks to ensure the Legislative Corrections Ombudsman (LCO) office operates efficiently and effectively. This position supports the Executive Assistant.

The Office Assistant will help with administrative work such as scanning, emailing, creating documents for staff; maintaining confidential records, files, and computerized databases, and may compose memos or other correspondence. Work is performed under limited supervision, reporting directly to the Ombudsman and supporting the Executive Assistant.

The Legislative Corrections Ombudsman Office (LCO) is non-partisan legislative agency that investigates complaints from prisoners and legislators regarding the administrative actions of the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) that are alleged to be contrary to department policy, procedure, or state law.

Required Education and Experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school graduate or possession of a GED Certificate required.

  • Intermediate-level experience in the use of personal computers preferred, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, spreadsheets, and database use.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.

  • Organized self-starter with strong attention to details required.

  • Ability to accurately proofread documents required.

    The Legislative Council is a nonpartisan legislative information and service agency. This is an unclassified, non-Civil Service position in State government. All Legislative Council employees are considered “at-will,” except for LSB Printing Division union members. Employees are required to be non-partisan and maintain confidentiality.

Leave Time

Insurance and Other Benefits

Insurances include health, vision, dental and life. Employees also have the option to purchase voluntary insurances for additional life, accidental death, long term disability, long term care, and legal services, to name a few. Premiums vary for these insurances. Flexible spending accounts for medical expenses and child care are also available.

Deferred Compensation

Employees may invest income in a tax-deferred retirement investment program. The state offers two optional deferred compensation plans, the 457 and 401(k). Employees decide the amount deducted from each paycheck.

Retirement

Employees receive a minimum 4% state contribution toward their defined contribution retirement fund. If an employee elects to contribute more, the state will match that percentage (up to 3%).
