The Work You Will Do:

Park Ranger(Burn position) - 37020859

An opportunity is anticipated for a self-motivated, hard- working individual, with strong resource management, visitor services, protection, and maintenance experience to fill a Park Ranger position located at Colt Creek State Park. Strong administrative skills are also needed to assist Park Manager with Parks’ administrative duties as needed.

Comprised of pine flatwoods, cypress domes and open land, this 5,067-acre park is home to many animal species including the American bald eagle, Sherman's fox squirrel and gopher tortoise. Colt Creek offers numerous recreational opportunities including hiking, horseback riding (with your own horse), biking, picnicking and nature study. Additionally, Colt Creek State Park has a 34-site full facility campground.

Located in Central Florida city of Lakeland, Colt Creek State Park includes more than 5,000 acres of native Central Florida habitat. The park can be reached by major highways I-4 and 27.

    Pay:

    Base salary $2,730 monthly/$32,760 annual

    Your Specific Responsibilities:

    VISITOR SERVICES- Explains facilities and services provided for public use, enjoyment, and education; meets visitors, answers questions, provides information and directions. Attempts to resolve visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations. Provides natural and cultural history interpretive programs and services via tours, walks, and campfire program

    MAINTENANCE - Constructs, maintains, and repairs small buildings, fences, trails, service roads, fire lanes, boardwalks, campsites, picnic sites, boat ramp, docks, and all other necessary facilities. Maintains cleanliness of grounds and facilities.

    RESOURCE MANAGEMENT– Participates in the execution of all facets of prescribed fire. Implements ecological burning plan for fire type plant communities; recognizes communities, control burning techniques and maintain fire lanes. Implements vegetation and wildfire management plans; recognizes communities and maintains optimum species control via natural and chemical means. Implements site restoration projects such as reforestation and erosion control. Implements water resource management plans.

    ADMINISTRATION - Prepares forms and reports on a wide range of subjects including fees, receipts, visitor use, visitor contacts, patrols, wildlife sighting and population counts, accidents, crisis and miscellaneous incidents, vehicle, boat, and equipment operations, property records, p-cards, purchase orders and requisitions, etc. Processes invoices, MFMP requisitions and other related items pertaining to the office administration for payment. Manage SAMAS/FLAIR reports, FIMS, Oculus, PPMTS database and future tracking systems. Act as Office Manager for office operations and ensures smooth operation of office procedures. Answers telephone, operate radio equipment, personal computer and maintain logs. Answers correspondence and maintains park files.

    PROTECTION - Ensures Park rules are enforced pertaining to all natural, historical, and archaeological facilities and resources and use thereof for enjoyment of the visitor.

    Performs related work as required.

    ESSENTIAL Knowledge, skills and abilities, required for the position:

    KNOWLEDGE OF: administrative principles and practices; basic accounting; Florida’s natural and cultural resources;basic arithmetic; good public relations;

    SKILL IN: communicating effectively verbally and in writing; operating a cash register and reconciling receipts; accurately preparing reports; interacting with all internal and external customers and the general public in a professional, tactful and courteous manner; performing grounds and building maintenance which includes but is not limited to mowing, weed eating, pressure washing, and painting; utilizing power tools, including but not limited to, chain saws and drills; basic plumbing, including but not limited to, repairing hose bibs, waterline repair; basic electrical work, including but not limited to, replacing outlets and circuit breakers; basic carpentry, including but not limited to, boardwalk and fence repairs; utilize a computer including, but not limited to software programs such as Microsoft Office Suite.

    ABILITY TO: participate in resource management tasks, including but not limited to, prescribed fire activities, non-native plant removal which may include application of herbicide;follow verbal and written instructions/directions; work independently with minimal supervision; establish and maintain effective working relationships; speak in public; understand and apply rules, directives, policies, laws and regulations; conduct routine inspections, identify and investigate problems; clean park facilities, including but not limited to, cleaning restrooms and picking up trash; work outdoors in inclement weather; perform physical labor; lift 40 pounds and assist in transporting items or other supplies 100 pounds or more; properly wear uniform; comply with male and female hair grooming standards and body art and piercing restrictions.

    PREFERRED KSA- Previous experience with State software programs; Microsoft Office Suite, Peoplefirst; Oculus, and tracking systems.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Successful completion of fingerprinting/background check

    Passing of moderate pack test must be completed prior to employment, and annually thereafter. Prior to being hired, applicants will be given a single opportunity to take and successfully complete a supervised moderate pack test at a date and location to be announced. The pack test requires applicant to complete a two mile walk while carrying 25 pounds in under 30 minutes.
