Engineering Team Leader

Location: Lafayette, IN or Griffin, GA

The Packaging team is a cross platform engineering group that manages products for multiple platforms and market segments. As a Engineering Team Leader, in the Large Power Systems Division, you will lead NPI teams and participate in developing innovative solutions to the program technical requirements/specifications, often complex problems faced by the packaging team based on platform (C15 – C175) and market segment (Electric Power, Oil & Gas, Marine) applications. Teams will consist of both internal and external partners, and you will be responsible for ensuring the proper design, integration, application, and ready for market requirements are met for the packaged generator set in each situation. You will manage the planning and execution of projects, continually learn, and stay abreast of innovative technology, coach team members, and broaden your professional network.

The successful candidate will have experience in component or system design, package/engine application, and/or system integration. Additionally, he or she will have strong people skills for collaborating with process partners and leading teams to identify and implement solutions for issue resolution. Top candidates will have experience with the Med-V, 3500 products, and C175, demonstrated ability to deliver quality results with a sense of urgency, and experience delivering NPI, CPI, and/or cost reduction projects.

The role of the Engineering Team Leader is to facilitate the team’s cooperation; clearly communicating the requirements and tasks, while gaining input from the team on refinement of same. Oversee program/project timelines, ensuring technical and implementation tasks are correct and aligned to NPI processes. Establish and maintain R&D budget spend to targets, communicating with their leader and customers on changes required to deliver to requirements. Sets strategy at the project level.

Team leader acts as spokesperson for the team in meetings with management and with the customer. Translating both verbal and non-verbal information from the customer, management, and team members. Team leader must develop good networks to enable them to obtain resources and cooperation needed and remove roadblocks so that they can ensure the success of their team. Team leaders must have strong communication skills and interpersonal skills; as well as, ever increasing skills in the role-based competencies of Managing Vision & Purpose, Decision Quality, and Negotiating.

This is not a supervisory position.

What you will do:

  • Provide technical guidance on needs analysis and initiate ideas

  • Communicate results to customers, suppliers, team members, and other business units

  • Lead teams in the design, integration, and application of components, systems, and products

  • Identify, plan and complete projects on time and on budget

  • Ensure accurate financial BoMs for all managed NPIs

  • Ensure closure of pricelist top down model quality issues

  • Leverage VDRA/VB processes to proactively resolve potential package build issues

  • Take ownership of implementing NPI issue Interim and Permanent Corrective Actions (ICA/PCA)

  • Coordinate and resolve product structure issues between NPI BOM/Config and L3-L4 teams to meet implementation requirements.

  • Work with marketing and product definition teams on product requirements and conduct trade-off discussions to meet NPI program performance, timeline, and cost targets.

  • Provide support for shop NPI builds/issues by investigating, coordinating with L3s, identifying Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) and providing Interim Corrective Action (ICA)

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering program OR equivalent experience.

Top Candidates will also have:

  • Prior packaging/engine application experience

  • Experience of Genset Product configuration

  • Must have strong problem-solving skills, a good mechanical and/or electrical/electronic aptitude, and good communications skills 

  • Price list implementation/management process and product structuring knowledge.

  • Prior experience with product releasing and/or working with global facilities.

  • Project planning experience

  • Exposure to Caterpillar Quality including Warranty, DPU, CPI

  • Exposure to Operations, Purchasing, Supply Chain teams

  • Exposure to NPI/CPI/Warranty/DPU

  • Advanced computer skills PACN, PLCN, CTS (Change Tracking System) familiarity

  • SAP, EOMP, CSQ, Shop change/Green sheet familiarity

  • VisMockup knowledge, some Creo experience, VDRA knowledge

  • AQE, OASIS, TMI and other CAT web tools proficiency

  • MS Office expertise (Excel, PowerPoint)

Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Extensive Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing environment.

Product Design and Development: Extensive Knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.
