National Park Service Maintenance Worker in Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania
Summary This position is located in Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River in the Maintenance Division. Temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours in a service year may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. The typical season is April-October but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 20, 2025 Responsibilities Performs simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and equipment. Performs minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools on such tasks as trail maintenance, grounds maintenance, painting, etc. Performs painting projects using appropriate tools and techniques. Performs minor plumbing repairs such as, faucet replacement, drain cleaning/repair. Performs restroom repair/cleaning services. Performs ground maintenance activities on public access locations. Performs building cleaning activities. Area Information: The Upper Delaware Scenic & Recreational River is located in Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania, bordering New York. The park manages 73 miles of river and several historic locations. The Upper Delaware River is renowned for its clean waters and amazing fishing including springtime trout and shad. Boating and visiting historic sites are other major activities. The small towns near the park offer basic services, while more extensive shopping, dining, and attractions are about an hour drive. NYC is a 2.5 hour drive southeast. Additional information about the park can be found at www.nps.gov/upde. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to operate a government motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. Qualifications OPM Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations (as specified in the Office of Personnel Management Handbook X-118C Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupations), will be used in determining an applicant's qualifications. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, the applicant must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials that they possess the skill level that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of maintenance worker without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT) Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc. Use of Measuring Instruments Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment Knowledge of materials Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS). If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility. The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM. Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations. Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.
