BASIC PURPOSE
The primary mission of the Lacey Police Department is partnering with the community to make Lacey a safe and desirable place to live, work, learn, and play. The Department coordinates and leads efforts in the community to preserve the public peace, protect the rights of persons and property, prevent crime, and generally provide assistance to citizens in urgent situations. The Department is responsible for the enforcement of all federal laws, Washington State laws, and City ordinances within the boundaries of the City of Lacey.
The Department enforces all laws in a fair and impartial manner; recognizes both the statutory and judicial limitations of police authority and the constitutional rights of all persons. It is not the role of the Department to legislate and render legal judgements or punish.
The Department serves the people of Lacey by providing law enforcement service in a professional courteous manner and it is these people to whom the Department is ultimately responsible.
The Department uses a proactive approach to solving community problems. This is accomplished by aggressive enforcement techniques and working in partnership cooperatively with neighborhood associations, the North Thurston Public Schools, community groups, and individuals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following statements reflect essential duties, but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing. The incumbent is also expected to meet the technical performance standards developed for the position and the City's standards for interpersonal and team behaviors, customer contacts, and supervision.
Firstline supervisor who participates in fieldwork and operational work of the unit. Supervises and coordinates the field operations of the shift. Sergeants may be called upon to perform the duties of the Lieutenant in his/her absence. Sergeants may be assigned other duties, assignments, or responsibilities as needed. Sergeants shall maintain efficiency, discipline, good conduct, appearance, and attention to duty of personnel under their supervision. Patrols areas of the City and enforces state laws and City ordinances. Responds to calls and works on projects as assigned. Work in both the field and office. Keeps the Lieutenant apprised of activities involving the shift.
Monitors calls and officer's activity; provides instructions and advice on situations requiring expertise; coaches and debriefs employees on shift activities and incidences. Reviews police reports for accuracy and completeness; inspects uniforms and equipment; completes performance evaluations; participates in training and completes related records. Monitors budget expenditures and assists with budget preparation as assigned.
Knowledge and understanding of the Department's mission/vision/cover values and policing philosophy. Leads by example. Embraces Departmental mission, vision, and values statements. Uses the mission, vision, and values statements as tools for teaching, guiding, and correcting employees.
ASSIGNMENTS OF THE POSITION
Patrol Sergeant
Supervises patrol shifts and may manage/supervise: Crisis Negotiators, Special Response Team, Civil Disturbance Team, Bike Patrol, Boat Patrol, Community Service Officers, civilian and/or sworn volunteers and Explorers. Sergeants conduct evaluations, maintain scheduling and minimum staffing levels, approve or deny training and vacation requests, correct and approve reports, allocate resources, coordinate pro-active operations, coordinate emphasis patrols for problem areas, keep abreast of crime trends, coordination field operations of an assigned shift and other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited law enforcement academy in Washington State or an equivalent academy in another state, with a passing score on the Washington State equivalency examination within 12 months of hire.
Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
Must have five (5) years as a law enforcement officer with at least one (1) year as a Lacey Police Officer.
Must have completed probationary period.
AA Degree or equivalent number of credit/semester hours required.
Must be able to successfully complete law enforcement supervisory certification training per the requirements and timelines set forth in RCW 43.101.350 (core training requirements must be completed within the first six months of entry into the position; and, all remaining first-level supervisory training requirements are to be completed within one year of completing the core training requirements).
Continue work toward middle management certificate.
Must pass pre-employment medical testing for the ability to perform the essential functions of the position and maintain a level of physical and mental fitness necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
Serve as a role model and inspiration to fellow officers to maintain high levels of fitness while working in the law enforcement profession.
Must pass testing process.
Must have a valid Washington State driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the City and the City's insurance carrier.

Defend oneself and the public in physical confrontations.
Supervise subordinates.
Review reports of subordinate personnel for accuracy and completeness.
