City of Kotzebue EMS/Fire: First Responder in Kotzebue, Alaska

Immediate Supervisor: Fire Chief Position Objective: This is a permanent/on-call position. Performs customary duties related to fire protection, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, and emergency management. Serves as the principal hands-on labor in providing department emergency and non-emergency services to the community. Duties: 1. Responsible for fire protection and ambulance service for the City of Kotzebue 2. Responsible for providing patient care within defined scope of practice. 3. Responsible for vehicle inspections and ambulance operations during assigned shift. 4. Responsible for cleaning and maintaining the fire department facility, apparatus, and equipment. 5. Responsible for clear communications in person, over the phone, and via radio. 6. Perform and/or assume other job- or work-related duties as assigned. 7. Have or be willing to obtain all required immunizations. 8. Be willing to attend meetings and training outside of the regular duty schedule. Work Environment: EMS/Fire: First Responders may be exposed to noxious smoke and fumes as a result of fire and/or medical emergencies. This position will be exposed to environments that are dangerous, noisy, busy, and will need excellent organizational and time and stress management skills to complete the required tasks and achieve the essential functions of the position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; in outside weather conditions; and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. In addition, medical emergency services will include numerous accesses points to various modes of transportation including small planes, helicopters, small boats, ambulances, fire engines, heavy equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usual quiet and at times may be very loud.
