City of Kodiak Maintenance Specialist in Kodiak, Alaska

The City of Kodiak is recruiting for a full-time Maintenance Specialist, in the Harbor Department. The Department is looking for an experienced team player that has a desire to be a part of a highly engaged Harbor Department working hard to serve the needs of our community.

Under general supervision, this advanced journey level position is responsible for independently performing and leading a wide range of maintenance activities on City property, streets and right-of-ways, buildings, structures, and harbor facilities, vehicles and equipment, including floats, docks, ramps and associated upland areas. General duties include, but are not limited to: performing routine and non-routine maintenance and repairs; ensuring the application of correct, safe, and effective work methods; waste oil management; lawn care maintenance and landscaping; scheduling work crews and arranging for necessary equipment and materials; snow removal and ice control; investigating and responding to public questions and concerns; and train and lead the work of assigned employees.

The Harbor Department provides a variety of services and programs to support and enrich the lives of the residents of Kodiak. The Maintenance Specialist is responsible for providing maintenance, repair, and construction services in a safe, efficient manner and is frequently required to make independent, sound judgments on projects affecting the public health and safety, and to work without direct supervision. The Maintenance Specialist must perform these duties in a manner that reflects positively on the City and the Department.

Examples Of Essential Duties

Performs a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction work on various City buildings, facilities, structures, vehicles, equipment, and systems that can include carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, welding, and electrical. Conducts and records the results of scheduled inspections of port and harbors; plans and estimates material and costs of routine maintenance and damage repair. Performs inspections, repairs and maintenance on equipment, floats, docks, ramps, decks, fences, buildings and related amenities to include carpentry, concrete or cement work, metal fabrication and welding, parts replacement, resurfacing, reconstruction, and painting. Performs waste oil collection and disposal duties to provide waste oil management. Responsible for workplace safety and utilizes proper safety precautions related to all work performed; and maintains a healthy and safe working environment. Performs a variety of routine electrical maintenance including repairing and maintaining electrical cord plugs and outlets; checks and maintains lighting systems including troubleshooting issues as well as changing ballasts as necessary. Monitors, checks, inspects, and performs routine service, repairs, and preventative maintenance activities on equipment, applicable fixtures, and/or associated systems to ensure continued and uninterrupted operation. Operates a variety of maintenance equipment and hand and power tools in a safe and efficient manner and transports, loads and unloads equipment and materials to and from work sites. Conducts traffic control when working in traffic areas of the City; installs street barricades and cones prior to the performance of maintenance or repair activities; directs and controls traffic around work sites. Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner. Trains assigned employees in their areas of work including construction, maintenance, and repair methods, procedures, and techniques. Monitors and maintains materials, supplies, equipment, and/or applicable inventory items in assigned area of responsibility; initiates the procurement of replacement items. Maintains cleanliness of assigned work areas and facilities, ensuring the removal of debris; cleans and maintains assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools. Conducts special projects/assignments; responds to emergency spill and cleanup calls and related events by evaluating hazards and determining corrective actions. Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) and up to one year of specialized or technical training beyond high school and five to seven years of progressively responsible maintenance, utility or trades experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

  • Valid Alaska Driver's License or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential {TWIC) Card or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
  • Traffic Control Flagging
  • Forklift Operator Certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
  • First Aid/CPR Certification

Preferred:

  • Valid Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Generally describes the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time to successfully perform the assigned duties.): Knowledge of: Materials, methods, terminology, and tools used in maintenance and repair including those used in performing carpentry, plumbing, welding, and other maintenance and repair work; Proper procedures for operating, inspecting, maintaining, and repairing assigned equipment; Methods and techniques of general construction, maintenance, and repair; Operational characteristics of maintenance and construction equipment and tools used; Occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety requirements and practices; Applicable tools, equipment, materials and ice rink refrigeration equipment; Recordkeeping principles; Inventory principles; Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.

Skill in: Reading, interpreting, understanding and applying applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations; Performing maintenance and repairs in assigned area of responsibility; Operating applicable tools, equipment, and machinery in assigned area of responsibility; Estimating material, supply, equipment, and labor requirements for applicable projects; Preparing and maintaining records, logs, and related documentation; Training employees in proper work methods and safety requirements; Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.

Ability to: Ensure adherence to safety requirement and safe work practices and procedures; Perform a variety of tasks and heavy manual labor for extended periods of time and in adverse weather conditions; Operate a variety of hand and power tools, equipment, machinery, and vehicles in a safe and effective manner; Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Work independently in the absence of supervision; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in course of work.
