Nuclear Regulatory Commission Senior Health Physicist in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania

Summary This position is located in the Division of Radiological Safety & Security within the Commercial, Industrial Research & Development and Academic Branch. The supervisor is Monica Ford. This position is in the Bargaining Unit with the National Treasury Employees Union, Chapter 208. The position is subject to Confidential Financial Disclosure and Security Ownership Restriction reporting requirements. Responsibilities As a Senior Health Physicist in the Commercial, Industrial Research & Development, and Academic Branch, Division of Radiological Safety & Security, you will perform and coordinate complex licensing actions involving radioactive material and serve as a lead inspector to plan, conduct, report and integrate findings associated with radiation protection inspections of varied facilities using byproduct, source and/or special nuclear materials. You will investigate and evaluate the most difficult occurrences with radiological safety significance. Duties include but are not limited to: Performs a wide variety of lead duties associated with inspection of facilities using byproduct, source and/or special nuclear materials. Reviews license applications for all uses of byproduct, source and special nuclear material other then nuclear power production, including the most complex, sensitive, unprecedented and varied applications involving substantial potential radiation hazards and difficult safety analyses, complex operations and significant environmental considerations. Initiates enforcement action with regional management approval when inspection findings indicate a significant violation of the license or NRC rules and regulations. Prepares individual reports and coordinate team reports of inspection findings. Serves as a mentor and coach in the development of new inspectors. Provides guidance to new employees and inspectors undergoing the qualification process. Qualification under any appendix in Inspection Manual Chapter (IMC) 1245, 1246 or 1248 is required. Additional qualification under IMC 1248 Appendix A or B is preferred. Requirements Conditions of Employment This is a Drug Testing position. Qualifications In addition to the basic education requirements, to qualify for this position you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE includes experience that demonstrates technical aspects of the NRC programs and policies and inspections relating to facilities possessing and using byproduct, source and/or special nuclear materials. Experience in reviewing routine and complex applications for materials licenses. In addition, experience associated with a regulatory program focused on safety and security. Education BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Candidates must have a thorough understanding of the theories, principles, and practices in the general field of health physics, evidenced by possession of a bachelor's degree in a natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics, including calculus or equivalent, OR completion of the courses listed above, plus appropriate experience or other education; OR certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics. Additional Information The duty location of this position is King of Prussia, PA. In general, employees are expected to be in the office 4 days per pay period. Telework schedules are approved on a case-by-case basis. If selected, telework will be determined in accordance with Agency policy and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
