VAN BUREN COUNTY COMMUNITY SCHOOL DIST Associate/Paraprofessional-Middle School/High School in Keosauqua, Iowa

The Van Buren County Community School District has an opening for aparaprofessional/teacher associate positionto assist at the Middle School/High School.

Times for working and exact assignments to be made by the building principal with approval from the Superintendent. Hours may be adjusted as needed.

Candidate must be able to push, pull, lift, and carry 50 - 100+ lbs. Candidate must be able to be on their feet for extended periods of time, assist with outdoor activities including inclement weather, and handle life skills and care of student with all needs possible.

Follows the expectations and needs of our special education or general education teachers as needed.

Essential Functions:

Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. They are essential for one or more of the following reasons:

*General Expectations and Duties:

  1. Administer, score, and record such achievement and diagnostic tests as the teacher recommends for individual students.
  2. Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
  3. Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  4. Help students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
  5. Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
  6. Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
  7. Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  8. Keep bulletin board and other classroom learning displays up-to-date.
    1. Read to students, listen to students read, and participates in other forms of oral communication with students.
  9. Assist students in the library or media center.
  10. Check notebooks, correct papers, and supervise testing and make-up work, as assigned by the teacher.
  11. Check and record student attendance.
  12. Collect and record collection of money.
  13. Help students with their clothing.
  14. Assist with lunch, snack, and clean-up routines.
  15. Assist with wash-up and toilet routines.
  16. Alert the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  17. Serve as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  18. Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
  19. Participate in in-service training programs, as assigned.
  20. Cooperate with all district personnel.
  21. Follow all district policies, including those relating to a drug-free school.
  22. Contribute to an effective and efficient school district.
  23. Be prepared for any surprises and be able to cope.
    1. Discuss assigned teaching area with classroom teacher to coordinate instructional efforts.
  24. Prepare lesson outline and plan in assigned area and submit outline to teacher for review.
  25. Plan, prepare, and develop various teaching aids such as bibliographies, charts, and graphs.
  26. Under the supervision and with instruction of the teacher, assist in individual and small and large group instruction.
  27. Supervise students on the playground, in the lunchroom, restrooms, halls, media center and in those areas as requested.
  28. Monitor classes during teacher absences of short duration.
  29. Operate audio-visual equipment and/or computers.
  30. Perform clerical tasks such as making telephone calls, filing and maintaining student records.
  31. Assist in the office as requested.
  32. Be patient with students utilizing firmness, friendliness and fairness; consistently follow through with behavior management plan.
  33. Know emergency procedures for the building and classrooms within which you work.
  34. Contribute to an effective and efficient school district.

  • Specifications/Qualifications:

High School diploma minimum. Associate degree or other certifications preferred.

Must support our school mission, vision, expectations, and philosophy.

Must support the directives and expectations of the building principal, assistant principal, and Superintendent.

Must possess the following:

Excellent customer service skills, pleasant and helpful personality, must be able to pass a drug test, DCI check, background check, and must adhere to our appearance guidelines which includes clean and well-groomed clothing, nicely groomed appearance, no hats, no visible tattoo's or piercings, and other expectations as necessary to be appropriate in front of children and the public.

Must be able to read, write, and speak English. Must be able to converse in English.

Excellent people skills, excellent grooming skills, energetic.

May be required to attend other training as necessary.

Child Abuse Training, Blood borne Pathogens training, CPR training, and other trainings as requested and required by administration.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to lift, push, pull, move, and haul many types of items, furniture, and objects. Must be able to manage wheel chairs and other equipment associated with our students.
