Basic Function:

Provide leadership for Kent State University Varsity Esports team at Kent State campus. Administer and promote programs within the university's mission, including the recruitment and retention of student players. Reports to Esports Project Manager or other designated supervisor.

Kent State Esports, founded in 2018 offers both varsity and club level opportunities to our students on the Kent campus. Over the past two years the program has continued to grow and is seeking coaches for our varsity teams; League of Legends, Overwatch 2, Rocket League, and Valorant. Our teams represent KSU in the Esports Collegiate Conference (ESC) and additional conferences, tournaments, and leagues.  The job period is from July 2024-June 2025.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Provide leadership for coaching strategies and teaching methods to develop student players' skill and teamwork; analyze teams' performance and adjust strategies as needed.

Oversee recruitment of student players.

Oversee the scheduling of tryouts, practices, scrimmages and matches for varsity teams.

Enforce policies and procedures for student players.

Provide instructions for players regarding rules, regulations and eligibility for the games and competitions.

Analyze game data to better understand how the team is performing and identify areas for improvement and growth.

Develop strategies to foster competitive and academic progress and success of student players.

Supervise student players during coaching sessions, team competitions, and tournaments.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and one year of progressively responsible experience coaching high school, collegiate, and/or professional athletic Esports teams. --OR-- Associate degree and two years of progressively responsible experience coaching high school, collegiate, and/or professional athletic Esports teams. --OR-- High School diploma with four or more years of progressively responsible experience coaching high school, collegiate, and/or professional athletic Esports teams.

Must be able to work nontraditional hours, including evenings and weekends.

License/Certification:

 

Knowledge Of:

In depth understanding of competitive Esports games and the collegiate Esports industry Game strategies for Esports team to build skill and ability to compete League, conferences and institutional rules and regulations

Skill In:

Recruiting, coaching, instructing, and training student players Public relations Written and interpersonal communication Computer applications, including MS Excel and Word

Ability To:

Provide leadership and direction which supports retention of team members as well as the growth, skill and abilities of individual players and the team dynamic Analyze situations and develop solutions that best fit the team and players Resolve conflicts Work with a diverse community of students, faculty, administrators and professional colleagues Work nontraditional hours, including evenings and weekends

Preferred Qualifications -- if applicable:

Collegiate or competitive Esports playing experience.

Coaching experience in collegiate-level Esports.
