SUMMARY
The Director of Ski Patrol must meet or exceed the extensive job requirements outlined in the descriptions for the Ski Patrollers, and in addition to those skills, demonstrate the ability to manage every aspect of the operation of the entire Ski Patrol. The Director must demonstrate exceptional skill in meeting the following duties and responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (include the following, other duties may be assigned)
Manage a large volunteer patrol and a smaller staff of paid patrollers in tandem, and promote a harmonious atmosphere that encourages a cooperative, team-oriented partnership between the two groups.
Manage the basic day-to-day operations of the patrol which means the director must:
Insure the trails are marked and appropriately signed where necessary.
Strategically schedule and assign qualified personnel to specific locations on property, enabling them to respond quickly to incidents and provide medical assistance and transportation for injuries and medical conditions which may occur on the mountain, on premises and even on adjacent properties.
Provide a high level of customer service to guests and other departments at all times.
Together with Mountain Management, determine minimum staffing requirements, recruit and interview applicants, and hire the most qualified individuals for the paid and volunteer patrols.
Determine the necessary material and equipment requirements for the efficient operation of the patrol and the general safety features on the mountain. Budget for, procure, and direct the maintenance of all those items.
Coordinate patrol activities with other departments, including lift maintenance, grooming, snowmaking, marketing, risk management and customer service, to ensure that trails are properly marked and opened on time, depending on weather, surface and lift conditions. The Director must often assume a leadership role in making the decisions necessary to ensure the timely presentation of one of the resort’s primary marketable resources.
Establish and manage an effective procedure to sweep the trail system at the end of the day, often enlisting assistance from the ski and ride department, to ensure that all of the skiers and riders are safely off the mountain.
Develop and administer a search and rescue plan to find and assist lost skiers and riders. Coordinate with the reporting party, other departments, and possibly state and or federal agencies. Regularly update and modify that plan to keep up with changing technology.
Establish medical skills certification and training standards to ensure that all patrollers, both volunteer and paid, meet or exceed the NSP and EMS requirements.
Provide a season-long training program for entry candidates for the paid and volunteer patrols, with an emphasis on mountain protocols and high-quality emergency care.
Provide mandatory ongoing training review topics throughout the season to keep all patrollers up to date on changing protocols and fresh on key skill sets.
Administer ongoing skills training for toboggan handling and low and high angle rescue.
Provide instruction and practical training for all aspects of lift evacuation procedures with an eye towards improving skills and developing modified procedures to deal with varying weather conditions. Create and regularly update an all-mountain plan that outlines the most efficient, effective and safe means of evacuation of all skiers and riders from any disabled lifts. This function includes training other mountain personnel and local rescue services, at least annually.
Delegate responsibilities to achieve maximum efficiency and provide career development opportunities for the patrollers involved.
Assume a clear supervisory role while maintaining an open, friendly dialog with all patrollers to promote input on ways to improve the patrol and expand their role in its operation.
Meet with upper management and developmental team to provide input on future construction projects as the mountain expands both its base facilities and mountain lifts and trails.
Other duties as assigned, which could be directly related, or un-related to original position.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises approximately 70-80 volunteer and paid patrollers, along with 4 subordinate supervisors. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and hiring employees, creating and carrying out a thorough orientation and training process, planning, assigning and directing work, creating and maintaining a Services standards by which to appraise and evaluate individuals as well as rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems. Also, responsible for monitoring customer correspondence and facilitating escalated complaints or inquiries.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Associate’s degree (AA) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
COMPUTER SKILLS
Must be proficient in use of all basic computer programs-Microsoft Suite/Word/Excel/Email/Search.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must hold a valid State of Vermont Driver's License and be eligible for enrollment as a driver on Jay Peak’s Commercial Automobile policy. Outdoor Emergency Care, BLS CPR.

Incident Command Structure, Chairlift Evacuation, Incident Investigation, Search and Rescue

RESORT CONDITIONS
This is a Winter Resort Area. It requires that work venues are varied, and in many cases include steep stairways, multi-level buildings and outdoor work areas, subject to very cold, sometimes wet or very sunny work sites. Some facilities are located at the base or bottom area, and some are semi-remote and can only be reached by traveling via chair lift(s), skis or snowboards. Walking surfaces are frequently frozen, sloped and slippery. Proper footwear is a must, indoors and out. Workdays and hours, as well as the number of hours required will vary, with an emphasis on weekends and holidays.
