The Center for Applied Research on Work (CAROW) is a hub for collaborative applied research efforts across the ILR School and the university. CAROW connects research on work with the practice of putting it to use. CAROW provides a platform for new interdisciplinary approaches, innovative methods, and nimble resourcing with the goal of bringing high quality research to bear on the challenges facing today's labor markets and connecting that research to external stakeholders and policy makers. Utilizing trainings, convenings, and new tool development CAROW advances the work of faculty and institutes conducting translational labor research and brings them together to drive new insights.


The Opportunity

The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has an immediate opening for a Program Assistant I - CAROW Program Assistant position in the Center for Applied Research on Work (CAROW).


The CAROW Program Assistant will provide administrative and program support to coordinate activities and initiatives for the Center for Applied Research on Work (CAROW) and its members. This position will also support the ILR Cornell Speech and Debate Program.


This position is located in Ithaca, NY, within the ILR School on the campus of Cornell University. Core business hours for our team are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM. ILR School appreciates staff by providing the opportunity for a campus-to-home hybrid schedule, mutually agreed upon between you and your supervisor.


Candidate Profile

We are seeking people who appreciate and will take ownership in the following, and not limited to:

  • Assist in administering program operations including coordination and communication with CAROW members.
  • Coordinate and plan meetings, events, conferences (in person and virtual).
  • Create and manage program databases and email listserves.
  • Collaborate with ILR Communications and Marketing in preparing and supervising distribution of promotional materials.
  • Process invoices and reimbursements; monitoring budgets; process travel advances and reimbursements.
  • Develop and implement work plans including coordination and tracking of deliverables.
  • Compose event evaluation surveys, analyze and report results.
  • Asynchronous program coordination support.
  • Proof and copy edit written materials, create web accessible materials, manage publications, assist in grant proposal preparation.
  • General program administrative support.

We require these qualifications:

  • Associate's degree and a minimum of two to four years of relevant experience in an office setting or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate multiple projects, manage events and special assignments.
  • Proven ability to successfully manage and prioritize multiple tasks while working within a fast-paced, busy team environment.
  • Prior event and meeting planning and coordination experience.
  • Experience with budget monitoring, reviewing financial accounts and preparing reports on financial activities.
  • Must possess the ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion, independent judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to interact tactfully with diverse groups of individuals.
  • Ability to take initiative and be a pro-active team member.
  • Must have outstanding organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including proofreading and editing skills, and experience taking meeting minutes.
  • Expertise in Microsoft products including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook calendar.
  • Experience using online meeting platforms such as Zoom, or Microsoft Teams.
  • General database operating knowledge.
  • Available to work occasional evenings and weekends with prior notice.
  • Occasional travel required with prior notice.

You will be a top candidate with our preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum five years of experience in an office setting (preferably research based).
  • Prior experience working with web development tools and project management tools and SharePoint desirable.
  • Experience with Qualtrics survey software
  • Experience in proofing and editing technical and scientific papers in the social sciences.
  • Working knowledge of document internet accessibility standards desirable.
  • Experience supporting grant submission process.
  • Knowledge of Cornell University travel and reimbursement and payment request policy and systems.

  • This position is located in Ithaca, New York. The position will allow for the flexibility to work remotely 2 days per week at a location of employee's choosing within the United States.

The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.
