The Opportunity

Cornell University is seeking a dedicated IT Field Services Technician II to join our team. In this role, you'll play a critical part in ensuring our campus's data, wireless, and voice network infrastructure runs smoothly. You'll work directly in the field, collaborating with local IT staff, customers, and Network Services engineering teams to maintain and enhance our communications infrastructure.


Key Responsibilities

Field Work:

  • Execute IT service orders for data network and voice infrastructure, including moves, adds, changes, and repairs.
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot network and voice electronics such as ethernet switches, wireless access points, and emergency phones.
  • Pull, splice, and terminate copper and fiber optic cabling, ensuring compliance with CIT and industry standards.
  • Assist in deploying new network and voice infrastructure for various projects, adhering to CIT-engineered designs.
  • Maintain and update online documentation of the physical communications plant.
  • Work independently, making responsible decisions and troubleshooting issues on-site.

Administrative:

  • Complete and submit detailed service orders, including time tracking, materials used, and problem resolution.
  • Update cable management and time tracking systems upon job completion.
  • Report equipment issues, inventory shortages, and quality concerns to the Field Services Supervisor.

Training:

  • Continuously enhance your technical skills through on-the-job training and formal courses.
  • Develop a personalized training plan with your supervisor to ensure ongoing professional growth.
  • Engage proactively in training opportunities to stay current with emerging technologies and best practices.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.
  • Complete university-required compliance trainings.

Work is performed daily at multiple campus locations - indoor and outdoor worksites - including construction areas, confined spaces, mechanical rooms, maintenance holes, and rooftops. Therefore, appropriate safety gear must be worn when required.


Must maintain valid NYS driver's license (will be required to drive university vehicle for work purposes).


The position requires rotational 24/7 on-call responsibilities throughout each calendar year.


What We Need

  • Associate degree; up to one year or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience installing, repairing, and maintaining wired data, wireless data, voice, and special-purpose network systems, including those based on copper twisted pair and fiber-optic plants.
  • A basic understanding of telecommunications, data networking, and structured wiring is required.
  • Familiarity with different categories of cabling components, e.g., CAT5 / CAT 6 and fiber-optics.
  • Ability to read and comprehend engineering documents and then execute plans in the field.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with an ability to remain focused in a fast-paced, team-based, demanding, customer-driven environment.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, reasoning, and analytic skills are a must.
  • Must be able to fully and precisely work to specifications and standards that directly impact the operation and integrity of the university's services.
  • Understand customer needs and deliver service that customers request.
  • Ability to think through the tasks in each job assignment and prepare for efficient job completion.
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to obtain and convey technical information to people of varying levels of knowledge and responsibility is essential.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

  • Experience working in Higher Education / R1 Research Universities.
  • Experience with Aruba Networks wireless and wired switching platforms.
  • Familiarity with Pinnacle / PCR360 or similar cable management systems.
  • Familiarity with Team Dynamix, or similar ticket-tracking systems.
