The Bowling Mechanic (Mech Maint S08) oversees the daily maintenance on Cornell University's 16 lane bowling center, with 60+ year old AMF bowling machines which endure heavy daily use from weekly Physical Education courses and increasing student/community use as the only bowling center in Ithaca. The Bowling Mechanic troubleshoots, repairs, overhauls, and regularly inspects bowling machines for proper function which includes electrical and mechanical operations of automatic pinsetter, automatic ball returns, lanes stripping & oiling machines. The position performs operational checks, makes necessary adjustments, repairs or replaces defective mechanical and electrical components or parts using soldering irons and other hand tools. At times, the Mechanic must use own ingenuity to build and find necessary parts, given the age of the machines. It is critical the machines continue to operate effectively and when down, repaired as quickly as possible to meet the demands of the facility.

As a member of the Helen Newman Bowling Center team, this position is expected to operate the front reception counter and cash register as needed. This position may also require regular evening and weekend hours. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.


This is position is part of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. The current rate of pay is listed in the collective bargaining agreement here: and starts at $24.79/hour.


Success Factors:

  • A strong work ethic, with a desire to learn and seek knowledge related to the bowling machines-in an industry with very little organized training.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment while solving multiple problems.
  • Keen attention to detail will allow the individual to successfully navigate 60+ year old bowling machines.

Required Qualifications:

  • Possess technical training, with at least one to two years in bowling machine electrical and mechanical diagnostics.
  • Ability to safely and successfully use a wide variety of shop and hand tools and to adapt parts to repair pinsetters and bowling machines.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills; as this person has contact with a wide variety of customers, vendors and others on a daily basis.
  • Basic computer skills to gain knowledge to repair machines, research and purchase needed materials online, maintain records of repairs and inventory and to respond to basic email inquiries.
  • ARC CPR/Adult AED/First Aid certified or able to obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Welding experience.
  • Experience with lane oiling, lane machine operation and repairs.
  • AMF pinsetter mechanic school graduate or 2-3 years' experience with AMF pinsetter maintenance and repairs.
  • Three or more years in bowling machine electrical and mechanical diagnostics.
  • Bartending experience.
