Position Summary

Assist with all aspects of management for all on-campus animal units of the Animal Science Department to support the Department's graduate student research projects and undergraduate course requirements. Assist with activities associated with the Large Animal Teaching and Research Unit (LARTU), Respiration Chambers, Teaching Barn, Equine Metabolism, the Livestock Pavilion, as well as Poultry and Sheep Farms. Assist with the coordination of activities held in these facilities, such as laboratory exercises for major undergraduate courses, research projects, public extension events, and campus-held events. Work with faculty, veterinarians, students, maintenance personnel, farm services, and others associated with conferences, sales, and shows held at the facility. Ensure compliance with all Federal, State, and University regulations pertaining to animal care such as the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE), Environment Health and Safety (EHS), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), New York State Agriculture and Markets, etc. and experimental protocols. Responsible for monitoring the health and welfare of research and teaching animals, including swine, sheep, horses, goats, cattle, and poultry, as well as maintaining records. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the feeding and watering of animals; assist in the mixing of feed; assist with the animal breeding program and natural and artificial breeding, including birthing of animals. Participate in marketing animals. Prepare and maintain emergency procedures and SOPs. Participate in the hiring and training of new employees. Reports to the Ithaca Farm Manager. This position is full-time (39 hours/week) and will be in Ithaca, New York. This is three-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance. The primary schedule for this position is Tuesday through Saturday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm with the ability to work weekends is a key requirement of the role.

Required Qualifications

• Associate's Degree in Animal Science or related field and
• 2+ years of relevant work experience with swine, dairy and beef cows, sheep, and horses, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of animal health issues.
• Experience in teaching /lab setting.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to regularly lift over 50 pounds.
• Able to work independently and in a team environment.
• Proven time management skills.
• Exhibit good organizational skills and the ability to pay close attention to detail.
• Requires weekend and holiday hours and occasional extended hours.
• Knowledge of standard laboratory safety protocols and guidelines.
• Willing to work in varying climatic conditions and be exposed to loud noises, dusty conditions, animal waste, and odors.
• Must be flexible, service-minded and respectful.
• Demonstrate the ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of students, faculty, and staff.
• Must be able to work closely with regulatory groups such as Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC).
• Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted NY State driver's license and must be cleared to drive for university business.
• Functional computer/software skills, including knowledge and experience with Excel, Outlook scheduling, and online procurement systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• AAS Degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technician Degree, Animal Technician Certification.
• Experience working in a research setting.
