Upper Peninsula Power Company UPPCO Electric Utility Relay Technician in Ishpeming, Michigan

UPPCO seeks an Electric Utility Relay Technician *to join their team in *Ishpeming, Michigan.

This position ensures safe and effective operation of transmission, distribution and generating facilities by calibrating, testing, maintaining, and repairing electromechanical and less complex solid state/microprocessor-based protective and auxiliary relays and relay systems. This position reports to the Supervisor of Substation Operations.

WHAT YOU WILL DO.

  • Prepare and organize work assignments (obtain tools, materials, equipment drawings; communicate with staff on work area conflicts; report job progress to supervisor).
  • Calibrate new protective and auxiliary relays before releasing into service.
  • Perform shop and field testing/maintenance of relays and associated equipment.
  • Analyze, correct, and repair relay equipment malfunctions.
  • Stay current on new maintenance/testing procedures and equipment via participating in training programs and seeking technical training, assisting with on-the-job training for less experienced staff, studying technical bulletins, devising/experimenting with new methods and procedures, and modifying relays and equipment to correspond with UPPCO specifications.
  • Serve as a resource for others needing information, instruction, advice and/or recommendations on relays.
  • Write notifications of testing procedures for system control when requesting clearance/permission to test transmission relays.
  • Communicate clearly using telephones and two-way radios.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.

  • Associate degree in Electrical/Electronic Technology or similar discipline, or full rate Substation Technician status required.
  • Journeyman Substation Technician status or 4 years' experience in general construction, operation and maintenance of electrical substation and related equipment including experience with electrical power system/substation protective relay testing, SCADA, and control/communication systems.
  • Electrical, mechanical, and mathematical aptitude required.
  • Strong knowledge of electricity, system diagrams, solid state circuitry, and electromechanical circuits required.
  • Capacity for leadership and willingness to continually increase your industry knowledge.
  • Physically able to work in an indoor shop/plant environment with moving objects/machinery; work outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions; work in areas with exposure to solvents/degreasing agents, grease and oil, vehicle and equipment traffic, high voltage electrical energy, and normal substation electrical and construction hazards; slippery or uneven work surfaces; near or over rivers and dams; climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding or work from an aerial lift device with heights up to 50 feet approximately; lifting and/or carrying up to 50 pounds; reaching, crawling, kneeling, bending; hand-eye coordination with vision in both eyes and able to distinguish basic colors and shares of color; hear; use of safety equipment/clothing required.
  • Valid driver's license required and ability to travel, sometimes overnight, and for extended periods of time. May be required to obtain a Class A CDL is determined necessary for the department.
  • Must reside within 30 minutes of jobsite under normal driving conditions.
