Job Description

Purpose:

This position will develop, implement, and maintain EHS programs and provide technical expertise to AbbVie’s Select Agents and Toxins organization within the scope of responsibility. This position will also serve as an Alternate Responsible Official (ARO) for programs supporting select agents and toxins (SAT). Ensure regulatory and internal compliance, reduce risk to operations and employees, and minimize AbbVie’s liability. As related to the EHS-SAT programs assigned, the position will assess risk and implement programs, policies, procedures, assessments, and training materials as appropriate.

Approval as ARO through the Federal Select Agent Program. Support ARO and RO, ensuring compliance with US 42 CRF Part 73.

  • Develop and maintain EHS standards, policies, systems, and programs applicable to the area of responsibility to ensure systems are in place to enable operating in legal and ethical compliance with regard to EHS issues.

  • Provide EHS leadership and direction for management, professional, technical, and support staff in areas of responsibility, including biosafety and biosecurity.

  • Provide business perspective and strategic and tactical direction to develop and implement EHS initiatives for the EHS Long range plan.

  • Authority to represent AbbVie externally on matters related to EHS with external regulatory agencies and non-government organizations

  • Maintain a broad understanding of local, regional, and federal EHS regulations and practices for areas of responsibility.

  • Monitor regulatory requirements/trends, conduct impact analyses, and implement programs to ensure regulatory and internal standards compliance.

  • Coordinate EHS-SAT activities across organizational boundaries, including GEMBA walks and inventory checks. Advise site management on the status of EHS systems.

  • Track, manage, and communicate compliance status, key performance indicators, trends, priority issues, and business impact to key stakeholders. Create plans to address issues identified.

  • Conduct incident investigations, identify root causes, and implement improvement/action plans to prevent similar incidents from occurring; manage incident responses and CAPA’s.

  • Participate and/or lead cross-functional teams to represent EHS-SAT objectives related to the subject matter and meet the team’s overall objectives and expectations. Develop and conduct training course material to meet the needs of the learner or business.

  • Identify and promote process improvements that strengthen the EHS-SAT function and the overall organization and minimize/eliminate risk.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (EHS related, Engineering, biology, chemistry) plus 5+ years of EHS related experience

  • Master’s Degree (EHS related, Engineering, biology, chemistry) or 3 years of EHS related experience.

  • EHS (CSP, CIH, CBSP) or Engineering professional certification is preferred but not required.

  • Working experience with the Federal Select Agent Program, implementing EHS regulations, conducting incident investigations, and managing cross-functional teams in R&D or manufacturing is desired.

  • Ability to establish measurable project goals and implementation plans, balance conflicting work demands, and develop action plans.

  • Ability to develop standards and/or policies that meet business objectives.

  • Ability to actively listen, build, and maintain effective working relationships with internal/ external colleagues and stakeholders and resolve conflict constructively.

  • Hands-on experience in implementing EHS regulations, conducting incident investigations, and interacting with regulatory agencies.

Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors, including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
