Controls Engineer
Job Duties
Primary:
Design and develop software programs (PLC) specific to customers and project requirements based on standard ATS programming methods.
Debug and commission control systems at our facility, during the system integration stage and then at the customer’s site during installation. Collect data from software reviews to populate department DVM, KPI’s and individual metrics.
Problem-solve with Mechanical Builders, debug software issues, and update all appropriate documentation.
Provide thorough testing of machine functionality to verify test system program completeness.
Participate in internal and customer design reviews, installations, and service calls when needed.
Work with suppliers to find/develop the most functional and economical solutions to design issues.
Select, test, and integrate hardware and software components such as robots, analog devices, motion controllers, sensors, vision systems and lasers.
Travel as required to customer and supplier sites to perform installation, commissioning, and training duties.
Contribute to the development and maintenance of ATS internal and international standards.
Works with other members of the software development department and other groups to continuously improve methods of integrating test system software and instrumentation technology.
Work with other members of the control systems design department and other groups to ensure that labor and material budgets as well as scheduled delivery dates are adhered to or improved upon.
Work with customers, project managers, designers, toolmakers, and electricians to solve problems and provide the customer with a complete, functional automation system.
Provide accurate documentation for each project.
Advise customers on solving technical problems.
Provide customers with training specific to their current project (i.e., machine operation, programming principles and program structure).
Qualifications
A post-secondary engineering degree, or equivalent, specializing in electrical, systems, or computer engineering.
Experience Required:
Greater than five years of automation experience.
Proficiency in one or more of Industrial Automation Platforms:
B&R Automation (Preferred)
Allen Bradley
Beckhoff
Siemens
Omron
HMI’s, Stepper/Servo control, AIO, and Electrical design.
Knowledge of Communication Protocols such as EtherCat, CANopen, J1939, UDS, DS301, DS402, Modbus/TCP, Ethernet/IP, and Profinet etc.
