QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current American Sign Language Certification

  • Forty-eight credit hours post-secondary, Local Formal Assessment, or Para certification

  • Previous experience working with children preferred but not required

  • Post-secondary coursework in educational field preferred but not required

  • Initiative to be a self-starter

  • Intuitive to the needs of the student

  • Ability to work well with classroom teacher, support staff, administrators, AEA and parents of student as part of an educational team

  • Ability to be flexible in assignment given

  • Ability to use good judgment when unexpected problems arise

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Building principal

JOB GOALS: Assist teachers in the instruction, supervision, and care of students with disabilities in a variety of instructional settings, including special education, general education and work/community settings in order to enhance student learning, promote the overall efficiency of the school system, and maximize the educational opportunities available to each child.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Any or all of the following duties may apply to a specific paraeducator position, depending on the needs of the student and the operation of the educational setting.

  • Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.

  • Maintain confidentiality.

  • Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.

  • Prepare and supervise students in bus loading/unloading. May include riding the bus, supervising students, collecting daily logs, and implementing a behavior intervention plan.

  • Assist in maintaining a safe and orderly instructional environment.

  • Assist in implementing consistent behavior management strategies and procedures.

  • Supervise lunchroom, playground, halls, classroom, and other assigned areas.

  • Participate in I.E.P. meetings as required.

  • Assist with instruction in the community setting as required.

  • Reinforce skills taught by the teacher.

  • Chart/graph student performance.

  • Prepare attendance cards and reports.

  • Provide student prompting and supports in order to access the least restrictive environment.

  • Implement the environmental supports in alignment with the student-infused skills grid and IEP to ensure access to learning targets.

  • Collaborate with the case manager to ensure appropriate services are in place to promote student access to the Iowa Core.

  • Feed, toilet, and diaper students as needed.

  • Under teacher direction, implement specific strategies to maintain/increase appropriate behavior and de-escalate inappropriate behavior.

  • Perform other activities as required by the building Principal or teachers.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • 175 days + up to 2 additional days of in-service = 177 days. Salary and calendar year to be evaluated in accordance with the Negotiated Agreement between the Iowa City Education Association and the Iowa City Community School District.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the District’s policy on Evaluation, State Statute, and any applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
