QUALIFICATIONS:
Current American Sign Language Certification
Forty-eight credit hours post-secondary, Local Formal Assessment, or Para certification
Previous experience working with children preferred but not required
Post-secondary coursework in educational field preferred but not required
Initiative to be a self-starter
Intuitive to the needs of the student
Ability to work well with classroom teacher, support staff, administrators, AEA and parents of student as part of an educational team
Ability to be flexible in assignment given
Ability to use good judgment when unexpected problems arise

REPORTS TO: Building principal
JOB GOALS: Assist teachers in the instruction, supervision, and care of students with disabilities in a variety of instructional settings, including special education, general education and work/community settings in order to enhance student learning, promote the overall efficiency of the school system, and maximize the educational opportunities available to each child.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Any or all of the following duties may apply to a specific paraeducator position, depending on the needs of the student and the operation of the educational setting.
Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
Maintain confidentiality.
Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.
Prepare and supervise students in bus loading/unloading. May include riding the bus, supervising students, collecting daily logs, and implementing a behavior intervention plan.
Assist in maintaining a safe and orderly instructional environment.
Assist in implementing consistent behavior management strategies and procedures.
Supervise lunchroom, playground, halls, classroom, and other assigned areas.
Participate in I.E.P. meetings as required.
Assist with instruction in the community setting as required.
Reinforce skills taught by the teacher.
Chart/graph student performance.
Prepare attendance cards and reports.
Provide student prompting and supports in order to access the least restrictive environment.
Implement the environmental supports in alignment with the student-infused skills grid and IEP to ensure access to learning targets.
Collaborate with the case manager to ensure appropriate services are in place to promote student access to the Iowa Core.
Feed, toilet, and diaper students as needed.
Under teacher direction, implement specific strategies to maintain/increase appropriate behavior and de-escalate inappropriate behavior.
Perform other activities as required by the building Principal or teachers.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- 175 days + up to 2 additional days of in-service = 177 days. Salary and calendar year to be evaluated in accordance with the Negotiated Agreement between the Iowa City Education Association and the Iowa City Community School District.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the District’s policy on Evaluation, State Statute, and any applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
