POSITION SUMMARY:

Research, draft, and submit proposals to secure grant funding for SFS. Enhance the agency’s capacity by a dedicated effort to identify and respond to private and corporate funding/grant opportunities, and periodically work in partnership for the completion of public contract grants and reports. A successful candidate will have the initiative to develop and nurture relationships across the agency, as well as experience in working with both internal and external stakeholders to produce successful proposals for funding and lasting collaboration.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • B.A. in English, Communications, Social Science or the Humanities or related field.

  • Extremely strong oral and written communication skills with good command of spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

  • 3-5 years of experience in grant seeking, relationship management, or professional writing/journalism.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with a talent for building strong and productive relationships across constituencies.

  • Extremely well-organized, detail-oriented, and able to thrive in a busy environment.

  • Creative, self-driven, and proactive problem solver with comfort to perform a variety of duties.

  • Proven word processing and overall computer expertise including MS Office, PowerPoint, Publisher, and an aptitude for learning new software programs.

  • Initiative, creativity, reliability, flexibility, thoroughness.

  • High integrity when dealing with a broad array of cultures and restricted and/or confidential information.

  • Ability to accurately maintain and produce files, records, logs, and reports.

  • May be required to assume responsibilities or duties within the agency not specifically delineated in this job description for short periods of time or on an infrequent basis.

  • Experience on fundraising / non-profit development team.

     

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Proficient in writing and leading the state, federal and local grant opportunities with government agencies, foundations, corporations, and specialty grants.

  • Research potential grant opportunities from government agencies, foundations, and other sources aligned with the organization's mission and projects. Collaborate with Starfish management to develop grant proposals showing clear outlines for project objectives, budgets, timelines, and expected outcomes.

  • Build deep and detailed knowledge of SFS history, mission, successes, programming, services, outcomes, and financial landscape; partner with Chief Philanthropy Officer to maintain ongoing list of prioritized agency goals (and related services) to align to best-suited funding opportunities.

  • Gather all the appropriate internal data and external research for the purpose of preparing grants. Primary on preparing and submitting grant applications, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and alignment with grant guidelines.

  • Approach grant seeking from a story-telling perspective – sharing the impact of SFS services, the assets of families, and the power of investing in early childhood, behavioral health and strong families and communities. Partner directly with marketing and communications staff towards attainment of success/challenge stories and creation of shared content designed to move funders to action.

  • Build comprehensive network of relationships across departments and program teams to stay abreast of trends, urgent needs, future dreams and to be able to access needed partnership and information for successful proposals, reports, site visits and relationship management with funders.

  • Regularly attend program quality and other program-centric meetings to gain knowledge and build familiarity with needs, staff, and external partners; engage directly with program staff members to leverage essential knowledge for successful proposals.

  • Lead thoughtful update of boilerplate language for SFS proposals in partnership with CDO and CEO, marketing and communications staff, and DEI employee committee.

  • Partner with program grants team and finance to ensure for clarity and/or development of consideration, writing, and reporting structures that have overlap across teams or knowledge.

  • Contribute to the development of and execute a strategic fundraising plan annually, focusing primarily on private and corporate foundation support.

  • Develop and maintain a detailed calendar of application and reporting deadlines.

  • Partner with Chief Philanthropy Officer and CEO to develop screening and consideration matrix for funding opportunities.

  • Partner with Chief Philanthropy Officer to develop strategies to coordinate portfolio of funder relationships: engage, solicit, and steward these prospects (largely executed through CEO and CDO).

  • Prepare and/or assure the preparation of high-quality grant proposals and reports for funders.

  • Provide support for appropriate Development team partners and CEO for in-person meetings with current and potential funders. Direct engagement and support of Foundation-led events and site visits.

  • Partner with the donor relations staff to support stewardship of family foundation/major donor relationships.

  • Partner with Development operations staff to build data-tracking and engagement strategies for funders with multi-faceted relationships (i.e.: corporate foundation, entity has many active volunteers and event attendees, corporate leader is member of SFS Board).

  • Work with the Development and Database Specialist to ensure that grants are recorded, acknowledged, and recognized appropriately.

  • Maintain accuracy of donor tracking systems and database for foundation constituents, while maintaining confidentiality of funder information.

  • In collaboration with the Social Innovation Department, coordinate the collection of organizational data for inclusion in proposals, reports, and other collateral.

  • Collect and maintain local, state, and national statistics and information relevant to SFS mission and services.

  • Prepare post-award documents and forward them to relevant departments. Serve as a resource during award set up and project launch and review active grant balances, support creation of any needed MOUs or other unique document.

  • Manage or participate as project team member for special projects as needed, including support for special event sponsorship materials.
