About the State Comptroller's Office:
The mission of the State Comptroller’s Office is to carry out the constitutional responsibilities of the Comptroller by: Informing the public about the Indiana State government’s finances; Maintaining the State’s financial records and reports and paying the State’s bills and employees accurately and efficiently; Taking a leadership role in the development of the State’s financial policy; Upholding the public’s trust and confidence by ensuring that Hoosier’s tax dollars are accounted for and spent transparently; Serving as a check and balance within the executive branch to sustain accountability among state and local governmental entities and; Providing quality customer service to all who conduct business with the State of Indiana.
Role Overview:
The Office of the Comptroller is seeking a Property Tax Specialist to join our agency in the summer of 2025. The Comptroller’s office works closely with local political subdivisions and local officials. Semiannually, we work with the local county auditor and treasurer as they prepare to distribute $10 billion of property tax collections. The Comptroller’s office will review and approve the collections, reconciliations, distribution rates, adjustments, refunds, and prior period corrections prior to approving the county officials sending the money to the various schools, cities/towns, libraries, and townships in their area. Statutorily, we also process monthly distributions like the motor vehicle highway, local road and street, innkeepers, food and beverage, and local income tax to local recipients.
Salary Statement:
The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those who do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.
Hours Per Week:
Approximately 22.5 hours with the opportunity for up to 30 hours per week.
A Day in the Life:
As a Comptroller Local Government Property Tax Specialist intern, you’ll gain valuable hands-on experience with:
Auditing and approving 92 counties as they work through the Spring Property Tax Settlement
The tracking and reporting of the Comptroller’s progress throughout the Spring Property Settlement process
Daily reviewing and depositing of various locally collected taxes remitted to the State
Weekly reviewing and distributions of various State collected taxes sent to local political subdivisions
What You'll Need for Success:
Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
Academic work in related field
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
Ability to conduct well-informed research
Ability to solve complex, critical problems
Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
