Role:

The primary role of the Senior Director of Communications, USFS will create and execute an integrated communication strategy for Sysco's USFS business.

Summary:

Leading a team of direct reports, this experience, dynamic, high-energy leader will be responsible for developing and implementing targeted communications strategies, plans and programs, as well as tools and channels to help achieve business and leadership objectives across the USFS organization. This leader will help them ensure success, provide leadership council, and ensure alignment with the Sysco Way of Communicating.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Senior Director, USFS Communications will lead the development and execution of Sysco's US Foodservice (USFS) organization (US Broadline and specialty companies) communications strategy, as well as provide senior communications counsel and support

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate strategic communications plan to support entire USFS business including markets, and functions

  • Expand reach and impact of USFS leaders with strategic communication tools, coaching and through strategic branding and messaging of both the organization and its programs

  • Collaborate with Communications Leaders across internal and external communications to ensure that global, functional and USFS communications and programs are coordinated and delivered in a timely relevant and integrated fashion

  • Participate in the planning, organizing, and scheduling of quality programs, events, and activities that support the USFS business

  • Support Sysco's USFS business, global meetings and events, and traditional and digital multi-channel platforms to drive communications, colleague engagement, a purpose-driven, growth culture and open, two-way communication at Sysco

He/she will serve as a trusted advisor and partner and operating in an "embedded" fashion to provide support to the US Foodservice business's executives and functional teams/those leaders. It is imperative for this individual to be engrained in the USFS leadership team's recurring meetings. This will allow the Sr. Director to coordinate cross-functionally with a wide array of subject matter experts and business and functional leads to deliver strategic communications that can be carried out within the field and align with the larger communication team's editorial calendar.

As part of the Communications Leadership Team, this individual will engage as member of the Corporate Communications team to support bundled, streamlined and easily digestible communications that follow the "Sysco Way of Communicating." Additionally, this leader will contribute to the overall team through best practice-sharing and ideas for continuous improvement, as well as participate in department meetings and support various events and activities.

Required Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Communications, English, Public Relations or Journalism

  • Communications professional with a minimum of 10 years relevant experience

  • Minimum 5 years direct experience supporting C-level communications materials

  • Proven success in developing and executing communications strategies, PR strategies, and communications and PR plans for a large business

  • Broad thinking capable of making connections across the business and taking decisive action

  • Experience in interacting with stakeholders of all levels, developing and maintaining strong relationships

  • A strategic and analytical thinker, excellent business acumen and understanding of Sysco's global market position

  • Strong understanding of marketing and communications KPIs, measurement and reporting focused on business results

  • Strong writing, editing, and copy-editing skills and previous writing/editing experience in corporate communications, PR, or journalism

  • Confidence with setting up and supporting internal events (town halls, national associate meetings)

  • Experience in successfully managing and delivering sensitive, crisis and executive communications requests in a large-scale corporate environment

Certification and/or Technical Requirements:

  • Advanced computer skills, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel) required

  • Experience with Firstup, Social Chorus or Dynamic Signal preferred

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite a plus

Abilities and Skills:

  • The candidate must demonstrate the ability to craft strategic communications plans, which includes: conducting basic needs assessments, identifying and analyzing stakeholders and audiences, drafting strategies, action plans, tactics and messages, overseeing resources, managing implementation, and measuring/analyzing results. He/she must have a proven ability to transform complex concepts into simple communications that can be easily grasped by a diverse audience. He/she must have the ability to appropriately influence, when and where needed, especially when providing insight and counsel to the range of stakeholders (leaders, project teams, colleagues, third-party vendors) encountered in this role.

  • The candidate must be proactive and results-oriented, with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple assignments from conception to completion on deadline with minimal supervision. Superior interpersonal and listening skills, with creativity and flexibility in approach to solutions, along with excellent client management skills are also critical. Strong attention to detail is a must. Finally, this candidate must contribute to an environment in which all team members are respected regardless of their individual differences and are highly motivated to improve their individual and team contributions to achieve desired business results. A positive outlook and sense of humor are a plus.
