Primary Purpose of Position:

The Chemical Team Lead of Health and Safety is a member of the Regional team that provides strategic support and expertise to the chemical plants to achieve safe, compliant and reliable operations. As a leader in health and safety, this role helps build EHS capability, designs fit-for-purpose health and safety programs, processes and systems. Building capability will require enhancing the training curriculum and leveraging best- in-class technologies to strengthen hazard identification and mitigation skills. This role provides oversight and guidance to strengthen life critical practices, industrial hygiene, contractor management, rail/traffic safety and case management programs. This role will work closely with the Process Safety team in developing strategies and plans to continously reduce and mitigate business risks.

The Lead of Health and Safety facilitates the regional governance process and develops and maintains regional standards. This leader plays a key role in supporting the sites maintain compliance with government rules and regulations. In addition, he/she monitors safety performance through KPIs, development of new leading and lagging indicators, reporting, trend analyses and auditing. The Health and Safety lead assures corrective actions are implemented and collaborates with site Health and Safety staff in delivering EHS site plans and safety compliance obligations. This role will manage direct reports and serve as a mentor and coach to the plant Health and Safety Managers and their teams.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Enhance processes and systems to prevent injuries and occupational illnesses to associates throughout the chemical division. Develop new fit-for-purpose programs based on trend analyses, risk identification, mitigation plans and audit findings.

  • Establish systems to determine compliance with occupational safety and health regulations. Communicate to management the status of plant compliance programs and recommend appropriate courses of action to achieve compliance goals.

  • Provide leadership and collaborate with the medical and HR teams in managing and continously improving the case management program. Coordinate with staff of safety coordinators who provide the most accurate workplace safety and industrial health, with rigorous analysis, to foster best-in-class occupational safety & health systematic processes, procedures and systems.

  • Serve as functional leader for Health and Safety Managers, leads and safety coordinators at all locations in the Region in their efforts to implement and execute business plans, strategies, goals and objectives to meet government, regional health and safety objectives. Develop training programs and systems to build capability for better anticipation, recognition, and evaluation of occupational safety and health hazards. Serve as mentor and coach to health and safety managers and their teams. Foster a spirit of continous improvement in enhancing the overall management system.

  • Establish strategic Health and Safety initiatives that help all chemical facilities achieve their annual safety business plans. Serve as as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) at trials, depositions or any legal forum where the delivery of accurate information of company health matters is required. Serve as member of safety industry organizations and or councils to stay current on emerging regulations and best industry practices. Serve as an early warning system to management of the potential impact of proposed regulations or government actions involving new regulations that are important to the business and to recommend policy in the use of chemicals

  • Monitor safety performance thru KPIs, development of leading and lagging indicators, trend analyses and auditing. Interpret information to collaborate with plant health and safety managers to enhance programs. Faciliate regional goverance health and safety processes and meetings. Collaborate with sites to execute similar approach.

Education:

Required: Bachelor's degree in degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering or related science with special emphasis on Safety

Desired: MS/MBA, CSP and/or CIH certification

Experience:

  • 10 or more years of Safety and Industrial Health with Bachelors degree and 7 years of Health & Safety Program and People Management

  • Desired: 10 or more years of working with business units and strategic planning experience

  • Must be certified or certifiable in comprehensive practice of Industrial Hygiene by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene and/or Safety by Board of Certified Safety Professionals

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to apply knowledge to policy, program & safety systems development

  • Ability to lead multi-location manufacturing safety programs

  • Ability to lead & drive change

  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization

  • Establish goals, define & implement projects to meet goals, while monitoring & reporting on performance
