Duties
Function as a geotechnical specialist. Apply advanced geotechnical engineering techniques and analyses for problems and methods. Expand knowledge and skill set in area of discipline. Expand knowledge in other disciplines and/or functional areas. Continue to learn, remain current and apply independent knowledge and interpretation about departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and Black & Veatch policies and procedures relative to assigned tasks. Prepare a variety of complex geotechnical engineering deliverables. Perform complex research and develop recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection. Prepare complex geotechnical engineering calculations following standard methods and principles; manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements. Plan and conduct independent evaluation, selection and adaptation of geotechnical engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. Review lower-level engineering work or assignments. Oversee collection, assimilation, and management of data for geotechnical engineering work. Lead smaller production teams. Serve as the responsible charge for a project. Actively coordinate with all other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects. Assist with identification of key client interests and drivers on less complex projects. Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work on less complex projects. Provide support to business development or pursuit activities. Serve as a geotechnical specialist, having in-depth knowledge of an engineering process and/or of technical aspects of an industry. Design a complete project of moderately complex scope within an assigned practice area(s). Assist with performance management process, mentoring, recognition, and any corrective actions required. Requirements
Master’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering or related with a focus on geotechnical, dams or tunnel and underground engineering or related plus 3 years of related geotechnical engineering experience, or in the alternative, a Bachelor’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering or related with a focus on geotechnical, dams or tunnel and underground engineering or related plus 5 years of related geotechnical engineering experience. Must have a PE License. Must have professional experience in the generation of reports and deliverables associated with industrial and energy related projects. Must have experience in conducting and managing site investigation, soil testing and analysis, and material characterization. Must have experience with dam design, including inspection and construction; water treatment facilities ponds; tunneling and large diameter pipe inspection and construction; quality control & assurance in geotechnical and civil engineering. Requires experience with numerical simulation associated with dam and dam safety projects, tunnels and underground engineering, and liquefaction related conditions. Must have experience with developing design sketches and calculations using geotechnical software and technology platforms: GeoStudio Slope/W, SEEP/W, SIGMA/W; Plaxis Suite 2D and 3D, Rocscience (Slide, RS2 and Settle 3D), UTEXAS4. Requires foundation design expertise including bearing capacity evaluation, settlement and analysis of pile foundations using Ensoft LPile and Shaft, Foundation Analysis & Design, and Strata. Must have experience in ground improvement. Regular site visits to local client project sites is required. Up to 30% travel is required. Telecommuting is permitted within standard commuting distance from the Houston, TX Black and Veatch Office. Must have good written and verbal communications skills in English.
