DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

See to Succeed is a public-private partnership kids vision program that addresses the critical need of sight and eye care by providing comprehensive eye exams and glasses to school-age students in Houston and surrounding areas. We work with area school districts to bus children field-trip style to our high-volume vision clinics during the school day.

T he Houston's Health Department is seeking talented, self-motivated, and flexible individuals to perform the following duties for the See to Succeed Program:

  • Maintain the highest possible professional standards in performance, and customer service to the patients while representing See to Succeed.

  • Assist with clinic set-up/break-down, monitor inventory, and ensure that all patient and administrative paperwork facilitates an efficient workflow.

  • Conduct pre-testing on patients for eye examinations day of clinic and maintain the highest possible professional standard (hands-on training will be provided)

  • Assist patients with selecting frames and measure patients for size of eyeglasses.

  • Coordinate frames with facial and eye measurements and optical prescription.

  • Place glasses orders and ship frames to lab

  • Receive, sort, and conduct quality check on glasses orders.

  • Drive to various schools to dispense and adjust glasses on patients (mileage reimbursement available)

  • Prepare and maintain daily reports.

  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs and to exert well-paced mobility for an 8-hour shift including standing, walking, bending and squatting

  • Assist with other department special projects and duties as needed/assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position is physically comfortable most of the time with occasional periods of stooping, bending and/or light lifting of materials of up to 10 pounds. There are occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less-than-optimal temperature and air conditions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Requires a high school diploma or a GED.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Three years of administrative or customer service related experience are required.

Substitutions: Associate’s degree may be substituted for up to two years of experience. Bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the years of experience.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

None.

PREFERENCES

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is highly preferred

  • Optician Diploma or Optician Certification preferred

  • Successful track record of working with children and school administrators

  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills

  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills

  • Must pass background check and drug test

  • Experienced using Microsoft Office – outlook, excel, word; patient record experience a plus.

  • Ideal candidate must enjoy working with and around children (ages 6 - 18 years old), be flexible and adapt to change easily, be able to work independently. They will exhibit a positive, proactive attitude and show dedication to our mission. Team players are critical to our collective success.

Grants & Special funded positions are dependent upon continued available funds. If funding is no longer available, employee may be laid off or transferred. Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
