This position may be filled as either a Probational or a Job Appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a Promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency wide permanent status employees); or by Detail to Special Duty or Classified Temporary Appointment. Current permanent status, classified employees may be required to accept a Probational appointment if selected.

No Civil Service test score is required in order to be considered for this vacancy.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Either of the following will qualify

  1. A baccalaureate degree in one of the following fields: chemistry, one of the biological sciences, a health related field, geosciences, environmental science, wildlife and fisheries, atmospheric sciences, engineering or physics plus one year of professional level industrial or occupational health or safety experience.

  2. A baccalaureate degree in industrial health or industrial safety.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

An associate degree in the field of occupational/industrial health and safety plus two years of industrial or occupational health or safety experience will substitute for the required specialized baccalaureate degree in Option 1.

NOTE:

Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

NOTE:

Geosciences include fields such as geology, earth science, marine geology, oceanography, petrology, paleontology, hydrogeology, and geochemistry.

Environmental Sciences include fields such as ecology, environmental management, environmental toxicology, limnology, oceanology, marine sciences, plant ecology, and animal ecology.

Atmospheric Sciences include fields such as meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, and climatology.

To serve as a trainee in performing statewide industrial health and hygiene consultations.

Level of Work:

Entry.

Close from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Consultation Manager.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from the Industrial Health/Hygiene Consultant by participating in formalized classroom instruction and on-the-job training.

Examples of Work

Assists the Industrial Health/Hygiene Consultant when he acts in a consultative capacity by request to the management of industrial and commercial establishments; assists in performing material and process inventories and analysis; assists in performing preliminary analysis to determine potential health hazards; assists in performing sampling by recognized sampling procedures.

Prepares and ships filter samples to laboratory for proper analysis, applies results of such analysis to the case involved, and determines existence of a health hazard and extent of employee exposure to the hazard; assists in recommending new methods and procedures in order to maintain healthful working conditions and to prevent injuries and diseases; assists in analyzing the employer's safety and health program by determining its effectiveness and assisting in making recommendations for improvement of the program.

Assists in preparing inspection reports which contain process analysis, summation of on-site activities, sampling procedures utilized, and information concerning hazards at the worksite.

Assists the Industrial Health/Hygiene Consultant in maintaining sampling equipment and in reporting malfunctions of such equipment.

Assists in conducting training and assistance visits and follow-up consultations as necessary; determines correction of hazards and program deficiencies identified in previous visits; assists in determining employer qualification for exemption under the guidelines of the Inspection Exemption through Consultation Program.

Assists the Industrial Health/Hygiene Consultant in counseling employers in planning comprehensive health education programs; assists in developing and presenting special training programs.

Assists in conducting public activities to promote utilization of the consultation and exemption programs by private employers within the State and develops and presents informational programs to civil groups, employer, and employee organizations as requested.
