Job Description Summary

Michigan Technological University invites interested applicants for the Recreation Programming Manager position to join the Athletics and Recreation team as we facilitate an inclusive environment where recreation and wellness opportunities transform, engage, and support the Michigan Tech community.

This position will primarily assist with the overall management and operations of Intramural Sports, Outdoor Adventure Program, and Youth Programming. This position also includes responsibilities to collaborate with the operations of other departments on campus closely.

The Manager will report directly to the Director of Recreation. This position will also work closely with other staff within the Department of Athletics and Recreation and across campus.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

  1. Provides oversight for a schedule of youth programs, with emphasis on sports camp programs.

  2. Assist in developing policies, procedures, and programmatic details for youth programming.

  3. Assist with scheduling sports camps in consultation with the director and varsity coaches.

  4. Coordinate pre- and post-program development and execution, including application management, logistical planning, day-to-day operation, and program evaluation.

  5. Assist with registration set-up and reporting needs.

  6. Serve as a liaison between multiple campus partners in the set-up and ongoing coordination of program operations.

  7. Onsite supervision and participation during the operational time of programs.

  8. Assists with the marketing and promoting of Aquatics, HuskyFit, Intramural Sports, the Outdoor Adventure Program, and Youth Programming.

  9. Ensure all department marketing materials stay current with the latest information on all print and electronic platforms.

  10. Edit, update, and maintain program web pages with current up-to-date information.

  11. Creating widgets, flyers, and brochures for our digital marketing.

  12. Edit, update, and maintain a social media presence for all Recreation areas and drive participation and engagement through creative marketing.

  13. Assist in recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating part-time, and temporary employees, and student workers to meet established standards for all recreation programming.

  14. Assist in scheduling the use of indoor and outdoor facilities for all recreation programming.

  15. Manage and inventory all recreational sports equipment and supplies.

  16. Make recommendations concerning operational budgets.

  17. Assist in the overall operation of Intramural Sports and the Outdoor Adventure Program.

  18. Assist in establishing and implementing short-term and long-range objectives for Sports and Recreation.

  19. Assist with special events (as needed).

  20. Attend regional and national conference meetings annually.

  21. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

  22. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.

  23. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Master of Business or Sports Administration

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

● Demonstrated experience working in collegiate, recreational sports environments.

● Knowledge of campus policies and procedures.

● Demonstrated experience planning and executing events.

● Demonstrated the ability and evidence of commitment to work with a diverse group of students, staff, and community members.

● Demonstrated ability and willingness to work evening and weekend hours.

● Certification: First Aid/CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● Familiarity with Michigan Technological University and the Recreation Program.

● Experience, playing, coaching, or officiating athletics at a college level.

● Strong knowledge of recreation organization, and management procedures.

● Excellent time management, organizational, and communication skills.

● High-energy person and ability to work well with staff and student employees.

● Frequent evening and weekend work is required.

● Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.

● Demonstrated leadership of safety principles and practices.

● Ability to work outdoors with all age populations.

● Proficient in Microsoft Office (including PowerPoint and Excel).
