Jennie Stuart Medical Center, Inc. Nurse Extern-PRN in Hopkinsville, Kentucky

Nurse externs are nursing students who are currently enrolled in a board-approved, prelicensure program of nursing program within the United States.

Skills taught in the board approved prelicensure nursing program can be performed after approval from school faculty as competent, and are deemed competent by a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse from Jennie Stuart Health.

The nurse extern may provide nursing assistance under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. A licensed practical nurse may participate with the registered nurse in providing supervision to the nurse extern.

Nurse externs may not independently assume the role, function, or responsibility of licensed personnel, or be substituted for licensed nursing staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Skills you may perform upon being deemed competent: Application of heat and cold Insertion of needle/catheter into vein Discontinuance of peripheral IV catheter Insertion of urinary catheterization (male and/or female) - both indwelling and in and out catheterization Nasogastric tube insertion and removal Blood glucose monitoring Sterile dressing changes/wound care Splint application Tracheostomy care to well established tracheostomies Rectal enemas (without medications)

Skills you may NOT perform : Administration of medication (oral, rectal, IM, SQ, or intradermal).Administer blood or blood products. Access or discontinue ports or central venous lines .Receipt of verbal orders.

Required Skills

Actively enrolled as a student in a board-approved prelicensure program of nursing with a minimum GPA of 2.5.Successfully completed the second semester of nursing school.Current BLS certification for HealthCare Providers from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
