Cincinnati Bell Principal Platform Engineer in Honolulu, Hawaii


The Principal Engineer is responsible for defining the technical strategy and evolution of the platforms and associated products consuming the capabilities developed. Collaborating with the Architects to translate business needs into innovative business solutions that will improve the customer experience and is responsible to Test, Validate, Design, Develop and document technologies and solutions for a variety of communication applications.


  1. 50% Test/Design/Develop Network solutions that leverage various E&C network domains. Responsible for testing and validating the technical strategy and evolution of the platforms and associated products consuming the capabilities developed, translating business needs into innovative business solutions.

  2. 20% Perform Proof of Concept and Certification/Validation testing of new or modified network products in a lab environment using Layer 2-7 network/application testing tools. Provide and support creation of High Level Designs / Low Level Designs, Deployment Guidelines, Engineering Releases and associated test plans and results.

  3. 20% Document method and procedures, work instructions, provisioning guidelines and engineering specifications. Interface at the appropriate technical level to assist with the definition, design, test, and support of services offered over E&C's various data networks and access platforms. Responsible for the development of Next Generation Network and Service standards and policies.

  4. 10% Assist Operations team with First Office Applications and/or initial customer deployment. Provide Tier III/IV support to Engineering and Services Operations Team on escalated technical issues.

Education and Certifications :

  • Four years of College resulting in a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent

  • Associate / Professional Level Certifications for various Core (IP/Transport), Access, Data Center, VoIP and Middleware Applications and Services

Experience :

  • 8 to 10 years general work experience

  • Extensive background and experience in the development of network oriented applications and services across multiple domains

  • Extensive background and experience in lab testing, quality assurance and technology / application proof of concept benchmarking

  • Eight or more years of previous professional experience in a large, diverse, and multi-location Service Provider environments

  • Eight or more years performing analysis, debugging and resolving network hardware and software problems in a production and lab network

Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Previous sales engineering or network design a plus

  • Experience with Telco provisioning processes

  • Project Management experience a plus

  • Experience using network analysis, management and performance monitoring tools to evaluate product and service behaviors

  • Working experience with troubleshooting tools such as traceroute, dig, netdump/snoop, and packet analysis applications

  • Advanced background with security related Internet information sources, IETF RFC Standards and ITU-T Specifications

  • Experience with the configuration and administration of both Hardware and Software based Firewalls

  • Experience with Visio creating detailed network diagrams

  • Extensive levels of problem solving and analytical ability to analyze complex, detailed structures

  • Extensive levels of writing skills and ability to communicate effectively through concise writing

Work Environment :

  • Daytime tour of duty; occasional scheduled night and weekend work.

  • May require working alone

  • May require late hours and weekends to complete assignments and projects

  • Indoor work - Exposed to indoor conditions, dust, noise, dirt, heat, various lighting conditions, etc.

  • Work may be performed at various locations under varying conditions

  • May require sitting, lifting/carrying supplies and material of up to 25 pounds
