The Queen’s Comprehensive Genetics Center (QCGC) provides evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and management for patients in many clinical areas including prenatal, cancer predisposition, general pediatric, and general adult indications.

The QCGC team assists in the provision of educational programs and literature regarding recent diagnostic developments and the management of genetic conditions for health care providers. We also continue the process of data collection, assessment, and care planning which includes the patient and their families’ educational needs and ongoing clinical care. We evaluate and integrate appropriate research findings from multiple disciplines into our clinical practice.

I. JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provides genetic counseling and referral services for individuals and families at risk for or diagnosed with a genetic disorder.

• Promotes high quality standards of care for clients.

• Provides consultation and education services for health care providers and clients.

• Acts as a facilitator regarding molecular and cytogenetic testing.

• Demonstrates problem-solving skills based on theoretical knowledge and clinical experience.

II. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Required: finger dexterity, seeing, hearing, speaking, lifting usual weight of 5 pounds, pushing/pulling usual weight of 50 pounds, carrying usual weigh of 10 pounds.

• Frequent: standing, walking, stooping/bending, and twisting body.

• Occasional: sitting, stooping/bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, walking on uneven ground, squatting, twisting body, lifting and carrying weight up to 20 pounds, pushing/pulling weight up to 50 pounds, static gripping of an object for a prolonged period, frequent gripping of an object

III. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Not substantially subjected to adverse environmental conditions.

IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:

• Master’s degree in genetic counseling from an accredited program.

• Board eligible for certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics or the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

• Certification as a Genetic Counselor must be obtained within three (3) years of entrance into the position.

• Current BLS/HCP certification.

B. EXPERIENCE:

• Experience working in the field of genetics preferred.

• Prior clinical genetic specialist/administrative/teaching experience preferred.
