GAI Consultants, Inc. Technical Specialist 1 (Substation Engineer) in Homestead, Pennsylvania

Description

GAI Consultants is currently seeking a Technical Specialist (Electrical Engineer)  to work in the Power Delivery Substation Department in our Lisle, IL, Homestead, PA or Overland Park, KS office. It would be beneficial for the successful candidate to have familiarity with substation design and relevant engineering internship or co-op work experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform detailed design of low to extra-high-voltage substations and switchyards
  • Develop and/or revise existing drawings for one line, physical arrangement, electrical schematics, electrical wiring diagrams, grounding, conduit and wire schedules, bill of materials, site development, battery sizing, and equipment layout, including coordinating with CAD operators to develop organized, quality CAD drawings
  • Integrate physical layout and design of substations to interface with protection and control drawings or vice versa
  • Develop control and relay panel layouts including assembling the specifications
  • Create project criteria
  • Develop design specifications including the overall bill of materials
  • Design and size auxiliary systems including AC/DC load centers as well as batteries and chargers
  • Design and size conduit, cable, and backup generators
  • Travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews
  • Travel to site locations for construction coordination and field verification of designs
  • Assist with the technical development of the scope of services and cost estimates for substation and P&C projects

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's (B.S.) degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program with a strong academic background and coursework in electrical power concepts/AC power systems analysis
  • Strong communication skills, including written and oral communication skills, in order to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel
  • Detail-oriented and able to demonstrate professionalism at all times, with a "Client First" approach to all interactions
  • Ability to work on multiple assignments simultaneously and possess strong time management skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office applications

* Desired Skills and Experience:*

  • Familiarity with substation design
  • Relevant engineering internship or co-op work experience

  • Possesses foundational engineering concepts through undergraduate-level education. Acquires basic knowledge and develops basic skills through mentored experience. Applies learned knowledge and skills to perform assigned tasks. Performs routine technical work which does not require previous experience. Understands and complies with ethical codes.

Education

  • B.S. Engineering or other technical degree

Certification/Licensure

  • Driver's License

Technical Responsibilities

  • Collects data and gathers information or documents. Participates in laboratory testing and field investigations. Performs basic computations or analysis. Assists with preparation of engineering deliverables. Observes construction activities.

Project and Task Management

  • Responsible for personal task management and adherence to deadlines and scope.  ? No managerial responsibilities at this level.

Management Responsibility

  • Receives close supervision on all aspects of assignments.  ? Attains mentored experience from a licensed engineer.

Communication Skills

  • Possesses basic oral and written communication skills. Identifies and acknowledges principles of teamwork and leadership. Interacts primarily with internal project team members.

Qualifications

Education Bachelors of Engineering (required)
