Kaiser Permanente Nurse Practitioner/ Physician Assistant Rounder- General Surgery in Hillsboro, Oregon

Job Summary:

Provide high quality health care to Kaiser Permanente members in a cost effective manner and in accordance with accepted professional practice standards.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct assessment, diagnosis and formulation/implementation of treatment plan for patients presenting with surgical illness or injury. Outpatient responsibilities include histories and physicals, preoperative exams, ordering diagnostic studies and medications, screening referrals, scheduling surgeries, and post-operative follow-up. Significant time is spent handling patient inquiries regarding preoperative, intra-operative and post-operative care.

  • Provide inpatient care by rounding on General Surgery surgical patients during mornings and weekends. Responsibilities include writing post-operative orders, charting follow-up notes, changing dressings, removing sutures. Dictate discharge summaries and write discharge orders for follow-up care in the clinic. Hand off patients to the clinic staff for transition of care. Performs other duties as requested.

  • Provide surgical services as a first assistant on occasion as part of regular department surgical rotation.

  • Note: The above care must be documented in writing in patients permanent medical record in accordance with accepted medical/legal standards. All medical care must be provided in accordance with accepted practice standards, hospital/clinic protocols (including supervision by a physician) and State licensing guidelines.

Education

  • Graduate of approved Nurse Practitioner program, Physician Assistant program or equivalent requirements to meet State licensure.

License, Certification, Registration

  • This job requires credentials from multiple states. Credentials from the primary work state are required before hire. Additional Credentials from the secondary work state(s) are required post hire.

  • Registered Nurse License (Washington) within 6 months of hire AND Nurse Practitioner National Certificate AND Nurse Practitioner License (Oregon) within 6 months of hire AND Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner License (Washington) within 6 months of hire AND Registered Nurse License (Oregon) within 6 months of hire

    OR

  • Physician Assistant License (Washington) within 6 months of hire AND Physician Assistant National Certificate AND Physician Assistant License (Oregon) within 6 months of hire

  • Drug Enforcement Administration Registration

  • National Provider Identifier required at hire

  • Basic Life Support

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to assess, diagnose and plan effective treatment for General Surgery diseases and injuries.

  • Ability to use appropriate procedural/testing equipment, to see large volume of patients, and to interface with large physician and support staff.

  • Recognition of normal and abnormal surgical anatomy.

  • Safe patient positioning and padding.

  • Safe tissue handling and retraction techniques.

  • Suturing of deep and superficial tissues.

  • Control of bleeding.

  • Application of post op dressing.

  • Writing post-op orders.

  • Post-op protocols for blood transfusions, fluid balance, oral intake, bowel and urinary care, IV narcotic and other pain management.

  • Post-op protocols for care of surgical patients.

  • Knowledge of UM requirements for hospitals.

  • Understanding of capabilities of ancillary and support services both IP and OP.

  • Knowledge of documentation and coding requirements for both IP and OP.

  • Thorough and working knowledge of Surgical diseases and injuries and their treatment.

  • Thorough and working knowledge of surgical techniques, with particular emphasis on General Surgery procedures.

  • Working knowledge of state health care laws, licensing board regulations and controlled substance regulations. Important to know limitations and when to refer patients to the surgeon.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of clinical experience in a General Surgery setting, or equivalent hospital and/or surgical experience.

  • Two (2) years of surgical experience, with emphasis on General Surgery procedures.

  • Excellent assistant surgical skills, preferred.

Notes:

  • Advanced clinicians will have a mixture of inpatient and outpatient duties

  • Advanced Clinicians will provide direct assessment, diagnosis, and formulation/implementation of treatment plan for patients presenting with surgical illness or injury.

  • Outpatient responsibilities include independent clinic that involves taking histories and physicals, ordering diagnostic studies and medications, minor procedures, scheduling surgeries, and post-operative follow-up. Significant time is spent handling patient inquiries regarding preoperative, intra-operative and post-operative care. You may see a mix of general surgery, breast, rectal, post-op follow up for emergency general surgery patients, and post-op bariatric patients.

  • Inpatient care duties involve working with the on-call team for rounding on General Surgery patients, seeing new consults and admits, and doing minor procedures. Responsibilities include writing post-operative orders, charting follow-up notes, changing dressings, removing sutures. Dictate discharge summaries and write discharge orders for follow-up care in the clinic. Hand off patients to the clinic staff for transition of care. There may be other duties as needed.
