[**[JOB SUMMARY [[The position involves performing a variety of semiskilled and skilled work in maintaining vehicles and equipment, maintenance and construction work, and operating a variety of heavy equipment in the maintenance and construction of roadways, storm drainage and other public works facilities and systems.

- Evaluates vehicles and equipment for repair, preventive maintenance, and servicing.
- Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments, hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
- Inspects, repairs and services vehicles and equipment.
- Cuts and welds various metals.
- Evaluates safety of vehicles and equipment.
- Determines purchases for parts and supplies.
- Cuts and welds various metals.
- Operates heavy equipment of various sizes and types including loader, backhoe, grader, oil distributor, hilift, etc.
- Operates dump and other trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various materials or equipment.
- Operates dump truck with a snowplow and salt/cinder spreader in the removal of ice and snow.
- Operates trucks pulling a float or other equipment.
- Maintains a variety of records relating to maintenance records, phone bids, inventory, parts, materials hauled, work performed, job location, hours worked, etc.
- Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement patching, ditch digging, shoveling, jack hammering, chain sawing, and other physical labor necessary.
- Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
- Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
- Operates light and medium sized construction and power equipment, such as air compressor, brush chipper, brush hog, chain saw, jackhammer, or mechanized broom.
- Performs all duties in accordance with safety policies and procedures.
- Assists in the training of new or lower level employees to increase their skills and promote safety in the maintenance and construction of roads and storm drainage facilities.
- Places traffic control devices and performs duties as flagger for work zone traffic control in compliance with the Countys standards and guidelines.
- Performs some work as part of the Countys Emergency Operations Plan.
- Performs work at assigned location during specified business hours.
- Performs related additional duties as required and assigned.
