JOB SUMMARY

The Attorney II is responsible for assisting and performing moderately complex legal work. This will include, but not be limited to, conducting legal research, drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts, agreements and other legal documents and representing the County in litigation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

For County Counselor

  • Assists and provides moderately complex legal research, advice and legal opinions regarding civil, legislative, and municipal matters for the County.
  • Represents the County in civil matters, matters under the Administrative Procedure Act, civil litigation, mental health cases, cases sent through the Jefferson County Municipal Court and all appeals to the Circuit Court.
  • Performs legal work necessary on Sunshine Law matters for the County.
  • Attends court appearances, handles subpoenas, depositions, document requests and discovery.
  • Prepares and takes cases to trial, to include but not limited to examination and cross-examination of witnesses, issuing subpoenas, exercises discretion as to how evidence and arguments are presented, files pre-trial and post-trial court motions and litigates appeals.
  • Drafts, prepares and reviews correspondence with opposing counsel.
  • Attends County Council Meetings, Municipal Court dockets and meetings of Boards and Commissions in the evenings or during the workday.
  • Reviews and drafts contracts, ordinances, bills, resolutions, motions, deeds, pleadings, memoranda, briefs, discovery documents and other legal documents.
  • Research moderately complex points of law involving local, state and federal legislation.
  • Prepares legal briefs and memorandums of law.
  • Prepares and files municipal ordinance violation proceedings.
  • Performs work at assigned location during specified business hours.
  • Performs general office duties, including copying, scanning, printing, and filing.
  • Performs related additional duties as required and assigned.
