Job Summary

The University of Southern Mississippi, School of Biological, Environmental and Earth Sciences invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track instructor or assistant teaching professor of Biological Sciences with a specialization and ability to teach introductory Anatomy and Physiology courses to a diverse group of undergraduates beginning August 2024.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach introductory biology courses, such as Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Principles of Biological Sciences I and II. Communicate and coordinate with lab coordinator(s).

  • Advise undergraduate students in the School of Biological, Environmental and Earth Sciences. Provide direction and support on additional academic matters.

  • Maintain communication with students through regular scheduled office hours, scheduled appointments, and/or email correspondence to assist students in their success at USM.

  • Distribute, collect, and report course assessment data each semester in a timely manner.

  • Contribute to the service mission of the University, college, and school by participating in school, college, and university service activities. Attend school, college, and university meetings.

  • If funding is available, participate in pedagogical training opportunities that ensure instructional success.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Instructor

Minimum qualifications for the position include an earned master’s degree in Biological Sciences or closely related field from an accredited college or university. Other qualifications include 18 hours of graduate-level courses in Biology or closely related field and relevant teaching experience.

Assistant Teaching Professor

Minimum qualifications for the position include an earned Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or closely related field from an accredited college or university. Other qualifications include 18 hours of graduate-level courses in Biology or closely related field and relevant teaching experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to effectively communicate biological knowledge in a classroom setting.

  • Ability to implement activities that reinforce student participation and reinforce student learning.

  • Ability to design and implement assessments to effectively evaluate student performance in learning outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include, but are not limited to, prior experience in teaching university-level biology courses, proficiency with the Canvas Learning Management System, evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., summary of evaluations [student, peer, and/or supervisor]), and evidence of instructional development (e.g., details of course development and/or participation in teaching-related workshops or conferences).
