The Hartford is seeking a Vice President, Associate General Counsel – Coverage Litigation, Latent and Mass Tort Exposures. The VP, Associate General Counsel will join the Litigation & Claims Law Senior Leadership Team and lead a group of approximately twenty attorneys and support professionals responsible for handling the Company’s high exposure latent risks. This position oversees the Latent Bodily Injury and Latent Property Damage teams, which manage a portfolio of litigation and pre-litigation matters including sex abuse/molestation, mass-tort bankruptcies, PFAS and other emerging exposures, legacy asbestos and environmental exposures, and construction defect litigation. In this aspect of the role, t he VP, Associate General Counsel will be accountable for the strategic direction of the latent exposure portfolio and for developing and maintaining strong relationships with senior executives and clients throughout the Enterprise. The position also has oversight of the paralegal team that supports the entire Coverage Litigation unit and coordinates with the Corporate Litigation unit with the goal of driving the department’s cross-training, efficiency, and innovation goals.

This role reports to the Senior Vice President, Deputy General Counsel - Head of Litigation & Claims Law and is based in Hartford, CT.

Responsibilities:

  • Directly managing two Managing Assistant General Counsel positions and four attorneys on the Latent Bodily Injury team.

  • Accountable for the quality and delivery of legal services to clients, as well as the efficient use of Company resources, including management of outside counsel.

  • Accountable for latent portfolio exposure assessment and communication, and development and execution of appropriate resolution strategies.

  • Develop and maintain strong partnerships with key ELT members and business clients, including senior claim leaders and segment leaders.

  • Develop and maintain strong partnerships with colleagues within the Law Department, ensuring a continuous feedback loop with a particular focus on business practices and risk assessment.

  • Responsible for the overall health and development of talent within the Latent and Mass Tort Exposure segment of the Coverage Litigation Group, ensuring coaching, mentoring and development is occurring regularly.

  • Responsible for ensuring the Coverage unit employs a continuous improvement approach with a bias for innovation.

  • Work closely with the SVP, Head of Litigation and the VP, Head of Corporate Litigation to manage regulatory and statutory reporting requirements, including quarterly reporting obligations.

  • Advise and counsel Executive Leadership Team members and other senior leaders on legal developments both specific to the Latent and Mass Tort Exposure Litigation Portfolio and to coverage litigation environment, trends and developments in general, as warranted.

  • Recruit, hire and performance manage as necessary.

    Qualifications:

  • At least 15+ years relevant legal experience and strong litigation background required, with latent/environmental and/or mass tort coverage or litigation experience required.

  • Significant management experience required.

  • Demonstrated, dynamic leadership capabilities, including leading teams inclusively.

  • Demonstrated strategic thinking, judgment, and decision-making ability.

  • Track record of a collaborative professional style, with an ability to build strong partnerships with a diverse array of colleagues, clients and other stakeholders.

  • Outstanding communication skills.

  • Innovative, intellectually curious, and a strategic thinking; visionary, able to anticipate challenges; proactive and resourceful.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Lexis-Nexis, Internet and Legal research, and Microsoft Office suite (MS Word, Outlook, and Excel).

  • Juris doctorate from accredited law school required.

  • Candidate must be currently admitted to the bar in one of the 50 states.

Location:

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in The Hartford’s Hartford, CT office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$203,280 - $304,920
