Overview

The Platform Engineering team is responsible for building and managing the platforms that power our software delivery practices. We are seeking a product-centric and engineering-minded leader to help shape the future of software delivery.

What You’ll Be Doing

The Hartford is transforming how we deliver software to our end customers as part of our cloud modernization initiative. The Platform Engineering team plays a central role in accelerating our progress in that initiative and in driving innovation across the organization.

As the Director of Platform Engineering, you will play a pivotal role in defining and implementing innovative solutions that enhance our development processes and drive efficiency across the organization. You will take ownership of the existing platforms while also playing a key role in the ideation, design, and development of future innovations. You will lead a talented team of engineers focused on delivering innovative solutions that accelerate software delivery across the organization. Your deep expertise in the SDLC tooling landscape will be instrumental in transforming how we deliver software.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office location (Hartford, CT; Charlotte, NC; Chicago, IL; Columbus, O) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.

Responsibilities:

  • Define and drive the technical vision and strategy to build scalable, reliable, and secure software delivery platforms that support the evolving needs of our engineering teams, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.

  • Lead architecture decisions for technology innovation and be a thought leader and sounding board for your team, stakeholders, and partners.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define and prioritize functional and non-functional requirements, create a roadmap, and guide the development of solutions tailored to meet evolving business needs.

  • Build API-first and AI-enabled platforms with a sense of urgency.

  • Lead, build, mentor, coach, and inspire a high-performing team of frontend, backend, DevSecOps, and full-stack engineers to execute a shared vision between engineering, product, and other stakeholders.

  • Foster a culture of innovation and problem-solving throughout the platform engineering lifecycle, driving the adoption of best practices and methodologies.

  • Demonstrate a bias for action by proactively identifying opportunities for improvement and swiftly implementing solutions.

  • Plan and execute large-scale projects, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with strategic goals.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Proven leadership experience in platform engineering roles, with a focus on strategic design and management of developer portals, observability suites, and automation frameworks.

  • Expertise in public cloud-native technologies, encompassing containerization, microservices architecture, and serverless computing.

  • Strong familiarity with SRE principles and methodologies, demonstrated through the implementation of proactive monitoring strategies and performance optimization techniques.

  • Expertise in managing software delivery tools such as Jenkins, uDeploy, GitHub Actions, CodePipeline, and more.

  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, enabling effective engagement with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

  • Track record of driving innovation and continuous improvement in platform engineering practices, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.

  • Experience in team leadership and mentorship, cultivating a collaborative and high-performing engineering environment.

  • Proven experience in planning and executing large-scale projects, with a demonstrated ability to deliver on time and within scope.

  • Strong bias for action, with a proactive approach to problem-solving and implementation.

  • Experience in leading enterprise transformation efforts, driving significant changes in processes, tools, and culture across large organizations.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$166,560 - $249,840
