DESCRIPTION OF WORK The primary responsibility of this role is to support the implementation of the PA Department of Education's summer food program for children by utilizing fundamental knowledge of sanitation and food safety practices. As an intern, you will be responsible for conducting routine sanitation inspections and, if necessary, re-inspections at feeding sites contracted by the Department of Education. Upon completion of these inspections, you will be required to submit comprehensive reports to either the Regional Food Safety Supervisor or the Program Specialist. Additionally, you will be responsible for collecting, packaging, and sending food samples (including at least one sample of milk and one sample of meat) to the Food Safety Laboratory in Harrisburg. Furthermore, you will assist the regional food safety staff in inspecting seasonal event-related facilities and contribute to other food sampling and surveying activities as needed, which may include collecting milk samples, water samples, or participating in ongoing sampling projects.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

Full-time employment The employment period will occur between the dates of 5/1/24 - 8/30/24. Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch. Physical location of internship position: Inspection work in Union, Snyder, Northumberland, Montour, Columbia, Luzerne, Lycoming Counties. Position will be home headquartered if applicant lives in one of these counties. If applicant does not live in one of these counties the state vehicle will be parked in one of these counties and they will be expected to be at their state vehicle at the start of their work shift. Salary:In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable. You will receive further communication regarding this position via email. QUALIFICATIONS Internship Requirements: Current full-time enrollment in a bachelor's degree or advanced degree program in an acceptable major. Freshman year completed. Good academic standing (2.0 GPA or higher). Students in the following majors: Food and Animal Science Biology Nutrition An approved major course which includes a qualifying 24 credit hours of study in the physical, biological and environmental sciences may be acceptable. Pennsylvania residency or enrollment at a Pennsylvania college or university.

Additional Requirements: This position requires a valid Class C non-commercial driver's license. You must be able to perform essential job functions.
