Scope of Job
To facilitate access to UTHRGV and partnering facilities to procedural services for new and returning patients, coordinate financial arrangements including financial screening, communicating with patients, referral sources, and the treatment team regarding patient access and financial concerns. To financially clear outpatient procedures and perform scheduling functions for all required appointments including pre- and post-procedure services. Serve as a liaison and information resource for physicians, revenue cycle, nursing support staff, coworkers, admissions, peri-op services, and patients.
Description of Duties
Responsible for coordinating financial clearance and patient registration activities, scheduling of surgical cases and facilitating access to UTHRGV and partnering facilities.
Performs tasks related to surgical scheduling for all Surgical specialties. Tasks include verifying benefits, securing authorizations, updating information in the EMR / EPIC , patient estimates, and communicating with patients regarding their out-of-pocket costs related to appointments and surgeries. In addition, this position will perform surgery scheduling tasks for assigned surgeons, which includes the understanding of physician preferences and surgical patterns.
Obtains and verifies all patient demographics, insurance coverage and benefits, secures authorization and/or referral, and obtains patient estimates for all services. Secures payment of patient liability prior to patient’s arrival for surgical case.
Communicates with patients regarding surgery information, benefit information, financial information and responsibility, check-in times, NPO instructions and other information related to surgery visits.
Documents telephone calls from patients including complaints, general information inquiries, and urgent health care concerns. Delivers such information or requests promptly to the appropriate providers or their designees.
Serves as information resource for patients, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals by providing accurate and current applicable information to accomplish patient satisfaction and maximum reimbursement.
Demonstrates ability to maintain Registration Quality Assurance (Q/A) and productivity expectations as defined by specific departmental area as measured monthly and annually on performance review.
Handles multiple priorities, prioritizes workload, meets deadlines and meets urgent patient, physician and system needs.
Provides high quality customer service to both external and internal customers that meet or exceed the service standards of the health care industry. This duty includes prompt and professional communication efforts, face-to-face customer contact skills, flexible coverage of internal service needs and the continuous application of process improvement methods and skills for office services.

Required Education
High School diploma or GED .
Preferred Education
Bilingual (English/Spanish).
Licenses/Certifications

Required Experience
Two (2) years of experience processing prior authorizations and referrals in a medical settingorFour (4) years of related experience in billing, financial screening/clearance, insurance verification, collections, or procedural scheduling.
Preferred Experience
Surgical practice experience.
Equipment
Use of standard office equipment including knowledge of Microsoft Office and previous use of EMR systems (Electronic medical record systems).
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office environment; some travel and weekend work is required. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
Other
Exceptional planning and organizational skills. Knowledge of interpreting commercial insurance benefits/coverages to include: Managed Medicaid and Medicare, and traditional Medicaid and Medicare plans required. Strong knowledge of insurance terminology and knowledge of some medical terminology. Strong time management and interpersonal skills. Provides excellent customer service skills.
