WSP USA Cultural Heritage Specialists in Hamilton, Ontario

WSP is currently seeking a Junior Cultural Heritage Specialist to join our Environmental business line, located in the GTHA. Reporting to the Cultural Heritage Lead this position will be responsible for research and preparation of cultural heritage reports, field visits as required, and coordination with the planning team on large-scale cultural heritage initiatives.

What you can expect to do here:

  • You will prepare cultural heritage reports (such as Cultural Heritage Reports, Cultural Heritage Evaluation Reports, Heritage Impact Assessments, and Strategic Conservation Plans) in accordance with relevant provincial, municipal, and federal policies and regulations;

  • Conduct historical research using primary and secondary resources;

  • You will conduct field reviews to identify known and potential built heritage resources and cultural heritage landscapes;

  • Conduct archival research, historical map reviews, desktop data collection, analysis, and report writing

  • Travel and work on projects involving hotel stays, if required; and,

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the fields of Heritage Planning, Architectural History, Cultural Heritage Studies, Canadian History, Archaeology, Anthropology or related discipline;

  • 1-3+ years’ experience in Cultural Heritage or Archaeology in a consulting context;

  • Must have working knowledge and experience with relevant municipal, provincial and federal legislation. Including, but not limited to, the Ontario Heritage Act , Planning Act , Environmental Assessment Act , Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP), Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Provincial Heritage Properties , Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada;

  • Capable of delivering quality work in a deadline-driven environment with minimal supervision;

  • Able to follow and implement both technical and safety training and instructions during fieldwork;

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;

  • Ability to obtain Provincial and Federal Security Clearance;

  • Must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving policy (MVR); and,

  • A valid Canadian driver’s license.

  • Master's degree

  • Eligibility for Professional or Intern membership with the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals (CAHP)
