Job Description:

Parsons is seeking an Intermediate Biologist for our team Eastern Canada (Ottawa or Halifax Offices) to compliment the Planning and Ecological Services Group in Ontario. Parson’s Planning and Ecological Services Group works both in support of other internal groups (primarily land development/transportation/streets and bridges, and stormwater management) and also as an independent unit completing ecological assessments and monitoring duties directly for various clients.

Duties will include completing targeted field investigations for species at risk and regulated species, botanical inventories, tree health assessments, compiling associated technical reports such as existing condition reports, impact assessment reports and mitigation plans, as well as addressing any associated permitting requirements. Additionally, the successful candidate would conduct environmental monitoring for construction projects. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in the field as required, however, this position will require office work, with flexible office/remote work arrangements.

The Intermediate Biologist/Ecologist’s key responsibilities include:

  • Undertakes and participates in biological field investigations and data collection (e.g., breeding bird and amphibian surveys, bat acoustic surveys, vegetation inventories and tree surveys, wildlife and species at risk surveys, Ecological Land Classification assessment, wetland evaluations, and fisheries assessments) following established protocols.

  • Strong technical writing skills; provide high quality review of technical documents; report writing, impact assessment, ecological reporting.

  • Assist with managing project workloads, scheduling and coordination

  • Assists with proposal development, work programs, managing project budgets and invoicing.

  • Provide mentorship to junior staff members

Skills & Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of applicable experience

  • Private sector/consulting experience

  • Post-secondary education in environmental science/studies, biology/ecology/forestry, or related field

  • Experience in the collection, analysis, and reporting of field data following established protocols

  • Experience in the accurate identification of Ontario flora and fauna (trees, shrubs, wildflowers, grasses, birds, reptiles amphibians, mammals, and/or insects).

  • Experience with obtaining permits and approvals under the Endangered Species Act, Species at Risk Act, Fisheries Act, Migratory Birds Convention Act, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act

  • Proficiency in the use of ESRI GIS Software, including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS online tools such as Field Maps and Survey123, and database management.

  • Experience on MTO and Municipal projects; RAQS Certification (Nature Science, EA Planning Etc.) considered an asset or experience to obtain RAQS certification.

  • Current or past certification as an ISA Certified Arborist or Registered Professional Forester is considered an asset.

  • Strong knowledge of Species at Risk found in Ontario, including identification, habitat, and life-history.

  • Experience in completing Impact Assessment following municipal, provincial or federal policies or acts.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Maintaining and organizing accurate and detailed fieldnotes as well as photo documentation records.

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills particularly technical report writing.

  • French language written and oral communication skills considered an asset.
