Job Description:

Parsons has been a leader in the planning, design and delivery of transportation infrastructure across the world for more than 75 years. Our Canada team is looking for a highly experienced senior planner or engineer to add to our growing team in Halifax. Our team is focused on helping our municipal and provincial clients expand and improve their transportation systems through innovative and transformative solutions.

Position Overview:

The Lead Transportation Planner/Engineer will assist in advancing the growth of our practice by taking a leadership role with our Halifax team as a transportation professional. You will lead feasibility studies and designs of transportation infrastructure along the most important corridors in our regions, cities and towns across the Atlantic Provinces.

Assignments will address planning, concept design, functional design, stakeholder communications, and approval requirements. There will also be opportunities to progress projects to preliminary and detailed design, tender, and construction. You will also have the opportunity to lead or contribute to master plans and a wide range of other mobility studies, plans, and designs. The transportation focus may include accessibility features, pathways, trails, micro-mobility solutions, cycling facilities, arterial & collector streets, protected intersections & crossings, active transportation bridges, transit priority solutions, rapid transit facilities, integrated street/corridor renewals, and supporting infrastructure. Your projects will implement our celebrated Parsons complete streets and transit-oriented approaches and will transform the communities where they are located across the Atlantic Provinces.

Responsibilities:

  • Showcase your skills and experience as a subject matter expert in the planning and design of active transportation, complete streets, transit priority corridors, rapid transit routes, while always being mindful of accessibility and inclusivity.

  • Lead or contribute to transportation/mobility studies including urban corridor studies & designs, operational and feasibility studies, transportation master plans, and research on transportation best practices and guidelines.

  • Be the face of Parsons in leading transportation studies within public processes for projects and master plans as well as implementing community-wide stakeholder engagement campaigns.​

  • Manage, coach, motivate and provide leadership for staff to provide high-quality services and innovative solutions to complex planning and design challenges involving multiple stakeholders.

  • Manage or coordinate the work of other subject matter experts and firms and work within the Parsons collaborative team environment, including daily support from our complete streets teams in Ottawa and the Greater Toronto Region.

  • Manage or assist in the preparation of consulting team proposals and regularly enjoy the thrill of winning.

  • Champion Parsons’ support for new technologies, trends and advancements in the transportation planning field to retain technical competency, and to provide state-of-the-art services and advice to our clients.

  • Represent Parsons at professional association events, design standards workshops, and conferences.

  • Present your team’s award winning projects at local, provincial, national, and international conferences.

Requirements:

  • University degree in Urban Planning and/or Civil Engineering with a transportation focus is required. Relevant Master’s degrees or post-graduate certificates are not required but are highly valued.

  • Professional registration as an Engineer or Professional Planner.

  • 10+ years of transportation planning/engineering experience.

  • Experience in leading or developing plans and/or designs for urban transportation corridors.

  • Experience in leading multi-discipline teams, including the coordination of sub-consultant assignments.

  • Effective interpersonal, verbal and writing communications and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • Knowledge of national, provincial and municipal processes, policies, guidelines and standards related to transportation planning/engineering and evolving industry trends.

  • Participation in the Institute of Transportation Engineers, Canadian Institute of Planners, Transportation Association of Canada, or other relevant industry organizations.
