The Chief Engineer - Systems leads and manages the Scissor Lift NPD engineering team. Responsible for driving continuous improvement efforts across different engineering disciplines. Responsible for making critical decisions that have a large impact on projects and engineering initiatives. Develop and foster engineers to think innovatively, hold accountability, and process improvement on a daily basis. The Chief Engineer-Systems will participate in engineering activities to ensure successful product development, timely execution of programs, and total customer satisfaction. As a Chief Engineer-Systems, you will work multiple engineering disciplines and product development teams ensuring the logical creation and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions with a focus on future technology and integrated systems. Areas include: electro-hydraulic control systems, hybrid and electric vehicles, autonomous vehicle systems, advanced suspension systems, connected vehicle systems, material handling systems and other auxiliary systems and technology for on-road and off-road vehicle applications. You will establish system architecture, perform system trades and analysis, flow down the architecture concept of operations (CONOPS) into requirements and interfaces, and support verification and validation planning and execution.

YOUR IMPACT:

  • Lead a large engineering team consisting of Managers, Engineers, Designers, and Technicians across multiple engineering disciplines.

  • Plan, direct, and coordinate business and product strategy to ensure alignment with organizational goals.

  • Provide coaching and development for leaders including exposure to workforce planning, succession planning, resource allocation, horizon planning, conflict resolution, people first leadership.

  • Prepare and control department budget(s), forecast operating costs of department, and direct preparation of budget requests.

  • Collaborate with functional leaders to achieve strategic initiatives.

  • Ability to present and defend technical engineering decisions to Engineering leadership, Oshkosh leadership, and external customers.

  • Develop engineering goals and strategic plans for their platform team or product line.

  • Draft, review, and release requirements specification documents, including defining the requirements and verification baseline.

  • Support requirements, design, and verification team projects and coordinate regularly with key partners to maintain program objectives.

  • Lead the creation of user need requirements and decomposition of those requirements to system and subsystem requirements.

  • Collaborate cross functional with multiple disciplines to identify new, obsoleted or adjusted regulatory standards (e.g. FDA or IEC).

  • Review and approve system and subsystem requirement documents to ensure user needs are properly decomposed and intent of the user needs is met.

  • Ensure the logical and systematic conversion of product requirements into total systems solutions.

  • Use communication skills to work across the organization and customer/user community to ensure consensus and understanding of requirements and solutions.

  • Analyze preliminary engineering-design concepts to recommend design or test methods for attaining customer-specified operational reliability, using knowledge of reliability engineering and other technologies.

  • Responsible for completion of a project or part of a project of moderate complexity on time. May be responsible for overall project schedule and budget.

  • May be responsible for managing multiple priorities.

  • Understand and champion the Product Development Process, Life Cycle Management, Reliability, and Design for Manufacturing and product requirements.

  • Membership and/or certification in a professional organization (e.g. INCOSE).

  • Demonstrated engineering knowledge and experience in relevant electromechanical disciplines and design.

  • Experience in Product Design, and familiar in full life-cycle product development methods/activities.

  • Understanding and application of the standards related to Risk Management, Reliability and Functional Safety.

  • Experience in creation of typical failure analysis deliverables (Hazards Analysis, FMEAs, FTAs, etc.).

  • Perform and review system level architecture trade studies and analyses that will influence the overall system design and performance.

  • Develop vehicle and system level requirements for advanced vehicle system controls supporting research, regulatory compliance, reliability, development, failure mode analysis, verification, validation, testing and production implementation.

  • Create or improve plans and procedures, generate and present briefings, and provide leadership in select areas.

  • Contribute to the development of new technologies and establish system and sub-system requirements according to the needs of a project.

  • Work in a team environment with internal and external project teams on advanced control development efforts from the project concept through production.

  • Establish and manage requirements traceability and compliance.

  • Prepare system engineering program and design review process.

  • Build consensus.

  • Manage change.

  • Convey progress to Senior Management.

  • Work with Risk management specialist to identify risks and help define characterization, verification, and test to mitigate risk.

  • Create and assist in generation of validation test cases and execution of plans to generate reports to verify user needs have been met.

  • Performs complex engineering calculations, investigations, and tasks as assigned according to Oshkosh as well as general industry engineering standards and processes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Accredited Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field with ten (10) or more years of related experience.

STANDOUT QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Accredited Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, systems engineering, automotive engineering, or comparable.

  • Experience with larger OEM process and procedures.

  • Systems engineering skills.

  • Technical project management experience.

Pay Range:

$102,800.00 - $176,800.00

The above pay range reflects the minimum and maximum target pay for the position across all U.S. locations. Within this range, individual pay is determined by various factors, including the scope and responsibilities of the role, the candidate's experience, education and skills, as well as the equity of pay among team members in similar positions.
