Corewell Health Nurse Tech Congestive Heart Failure Unit in Grand Rapids, Michigan

About this unit:

6 North is a 38 bed Cardiovascular unit that specializes in caring for adult patients with Heart Failure, cardiac dysrhythmias, newly implanted pacemakers and defibrillators, pulmonary hypertension and cardiac conditions requiring medical treatment. Most patients receive continuous telemetry monitoring. Care is provided 24 hours per day 7 days a week.

Individuals would want to work on this unit do to the large variety of cardiovascular and progressive care experiences that allow for a robust skill set. If they were to transfer to another unit, you would gain time management, proficiency in the management of patient with complex conditions. Some skills you can gain on this unit include, bipap, respiratory management, pulmonary hypertension treatments, management of multiple IV drips, heart failure management, telemetry monitoring. The culture of this unit is team work and support. Staff works closely with physicians and other healthcare providers and services to provide optimal care in the inpatient setting.

Scope of Work

Nurse Technicians act as a team member in the delivery of quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). Responsibilities include taking vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization and acting as a safety attendant for patients.

Articulates the nursing technician role to the patient, family and health team members. Provides support to facilitate safe, quality patient care in a cost-effective manner.

Cleans patient’s environment / work area / equipment and communicates any equipment malfunctions to appropriate department / unit personnel.

Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organization data.

Orientation and Training

Orientation for the first week of employment as Nurse Tech requires classes:

Monday:

  • Day 1 - NT Foundations 1 – 0800-1630 ALL New Hire NTs are required.

Tuesday:

  • NT Foundations 2 0800-1200: ALL NEW HIRE NTS are required.

  • NT Basic Skills 1300-1630: All new hire NTs unless exempt due to experience. (Exempt- KCTC/OASID grads, prior recent hospital NT experience, nursing students who have completed at least one clinical rotation)

Wednesday/Friday:

  • NT Sterile technique class 08:00-16:30- all except exempt students (Exempt- KCTC/OASID grads, nursing students who have completed at least one clinical rotation)

3rd week after start date - Monday- 08:00-16:30 Advanced Safety Care-all new hire NTs are required.
