Job Description

At the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) we are looking for a Partnership Development Lead to join our Strategic Partnership Office (SPO), leading our efforts to expand our strategic relationships with philanthropic foundations

As part of our partnership development team, the Partnership Development Lead will work to develop a domestically focused strategy for foundation sponsorship of NREL research and technical assistance. In addition, the foundation lead will work collaboratively with the International sector lead to complement foundations that sponsor international work at NREL. This will enable a diverse set of foundation partners to leverage and benefit from the world-class knowledge, unique capabilities, and signature facilities at NREL.

The successful candidate will be positioned to directly expand NREL’s impact and support foundations as they seek to advance their missions that relate to clean energy transition. The Partnership Development Lead position is dynamic, helping to build capabilities at NREL and transfer NREL’s world class knowledge and expertise into society and applying our expertise to societal problems via relationships with foundations. The Partnership Development Lead’s primary focus will be on developing a strategy for partnerships between foundations a NREL and then identifying and developing those innovative partnerships. The successful candidate will have experience working with foundations, knowledge of foundation structures, and familiarity with the foundation ecosystem.

As the primary national laboratory for energy efficiency and renewable energy research, we focus on innovative solutions to today's energy challenges. From breakthroughs in fundamental science, to new to integrated energy systems that power our lives, we consider inclusive, community based approaches to energy solutions. The Foundation Development Lead will assess the potential of new partners to fund strategic work at NREL, develop partnership strategies for new clients, and pursue growth strategies for existing clients.

The Foundation Partnership Development Lead will work closely with Science & Technology directorate partnership leads, center partnership leads, and technical experts across the lab to develop and execute a business development strategy that will address our partners’ most challenging problems and further the mission of the laboratory. The successful candidate will be able to represent a broad number of NREL capabilities and complex topics to partners and connect partners to the right people in the laboratory.

The Partnership Development Lead will be responsible for designing the strategy and managing the activities needed to identify, develop, and secure partnership opportunities within the Foundation sector and in close collaboration with the International Sector lead. Activities are likely to include understanding and cultivating the key relationships with foundations, aligning foundation needs and NREL’s current and future capabilities, building strong internal relationships with researchers, project managers, and subject matter experts, and overseeing requirements development, proposal development, final pricing, and statement of work.

The Partnership Development Lead is expected to work collaboratively with other members of the SPO, colleagues in the Technology Transfer Office (TTO), the team of people doing partnership development across NREL, and NREL’s research community to accomplish the business development goals of the laboratory. A successful Partnership Development Lead continuously improves the mission impact of partnership opportunities within the sector, develops and maintains strong partner relationships, and is recognized as a key contributor to the SPO team.

This position is part of NREL’s SPO and reports to the office director.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Manage portfolio of opportunities to maximize mission impact and probability of capture

  • Work closely with domain experts to develop compelling solutions that partners value

  • In consultation with TTO, help partners understand how to work with and contract with NREL

  • Monitor progress against annual business development goals and change course as needed to achieve goals

  • Report progress to executive management and ensure the accuracy of the portfolio in NREL’s CRM system

  • Maintain a high level of customer satisfaction with partners

  • Seek learning and coaching opportunities to improve skills and grow

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Applies advanced technical principles, theories and concepts. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Develops advanced concepts, techniques and standards. Develops new applications based on professional principles and theories. Viewed externally as subject matter expert in field. Comprehensive and advanced knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Superior leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Strong understanding and application of partnership development principles, concepts, and practices. Knowledge of technical field and related disciplines and ability convey complex, technical topics to a variety of audiences. Understands the context within which the program is conducted and how outcomes contribute to the customer's success. Strong leadership, interpersonal, conflict resolution, and communication skills are required.

The successful candidate will possess the following skillsets:

  • Exceptional collaboration, team building, and communication skills including: 1) strong interpersonal skills, 2) a problem-solving attitude, and 3) the ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team player

  • Experience developing successful relationship development strategies for foundation partners.

  • Knowledgeable about foundations and key challenges foundations face in executing their mission.

  • Familiarity with clean energy technologies and laboratory capabilities.

  • 10 years of relevant philanthropic, business, and/or science, technology, or social science experience

  • Demonstrated project management and customer relationship experience

  • Proven history of developing and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree

  • In-depth technical experience in one or more clean technology areas

  • Experience working directly with or for foundations

  • Previous business development or project experience in a government or research lab environment

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Professional V / Annual Salary Range: $114,500 - $206,100

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
