Xcel Energy Manager, Control Center Assistant in Golden, Colorado

Position Summary

Position exists to ensure regional reliability through management of the Xcel Energy's bulk electric transmission system while ensuring adequacy of energy supply to the Xcel Energy balancing authority areas and reliability region. Ensure transmission services are administered consistent with Xcel Energy's Tariff. Perform operational liaison duties between Xcel Energy transmission system operations, Xcel Energy generation, Xcel Energy distribution, Xcel Energy management, Xcel Energy commercial operations, NERC, FERC, MRO, WECC, SPP, Reliability Coordinators, renewable energy developers, other non-Xcel Energy entities located within our Balancing Authority Area, and electric systems within the Eastern Interconnection, the Western Interconnection and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate functional duties of the Network Reliability Leaders and Operators in the 24x7 Control Center. Ensure functional duties being performed on Xcel Energy's bulk electric transmission system are safe, reliable, prevent damage to equipment, and minimize the possibility of loss of service to customers.

  • Manage security and reliability of the Xcel Energy's transmission system and balancing authority areas and reliability region.

  • Ensure regulatory compliance with local, state, regional and NERC Standards as they relate to balancing authority area operations, transmission operations and cyber infrastructure protection. Manage the administration of Xcel Energy Tariff, ensuring compliance for transmission service requests.

  • Coordinate work with the outage coordinator, trainer, energy accountants, engineering staff, Control Center support personnel, energy management staff, corporate technology, and other departments internal and external to the organization.

  • Develop and maintain performance measurements for Control Center personnel. Conduct performance reviews for Network Reliability Leaders, Transmission System Operators and the Balancing Authority Operators. Recognize and resolve personnel performance issues. Develop operating and training philosophy for Xcel Energy Control Center operations. Develop interview criteria and selection process for new Control Center personnel. Develop a succession and retention plan for operations personnel.

  • Manage the administration of Xcel Energy Tariff, ensuring compliance for transmission service requests.

  • Provide direction for other departments and utilities to improve process and resolve operational issues. Provide technical expertise for both Xcel Energy and other utilities dealing with current policies, procedures and standard development when required.

  • Act as project manager in the assignment of projects to the operators ensuring that projects are completed on time and on budget.

Minimum Requirements

High School education and technical school certificate in electrical system application or the equivalent. Eight years of combined experience in balancing authority area operations and transmission system operations. NERC Certification and qualification as a System Operator Reliability is desired; must have the ability to obtain NERC Certification within nine months. Ability to react in a stressful environment where it is required to continuously prioritize job tasks. Ability to formulate ideas into work process.

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $105,600.00 to $150,000.00 per year
