Job Description

This is a non-merit position with the Department of Human Services - Glenwood Resource Center . Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is currently seeking a Temporary Direct Support Professional (DSP) to join the team at the Glenwood Resource Center which offers a continuum of care to Iowans experiencing intellectual disabilities. This is a temporary position with HHS limited to less than 780 hours per fiscal year.

The Glenwood Resource Center (GRC) will be closing as a state operated specialty care facility on June 30, 2024. This position will end at that time. Applicants are encouraged to apply to gain experience in the areas of working for state operated specialty care.

The DSP will perform basic para-professional nursing or therapeutic work in the care and treatment of residents who are elderly, intellectually disabled, and/or mentally ill. An effective DSP must have the ability to provide the necessary monitoring, assistance, supervision, and activities to meet the residents’ daily living needs. Duties include:

  • Providing health and personal care to residents.

  • Intervening and redirecting behaviors using approved GRC techniques.

  • Maintaining a safe and clean environment.

  • Providing active treatment by following the residents’ daily schedules.

  • Interacting with residents with sensitivity, dignity, and respect.

  • Accurately following all prescribed therapeutic treatment plans.

Further expectations include:

  • Communicating pertinent information and maintaining a positive working relationship with co-workers.

  • Participating in staff meetings to discuss residents, policies, and procedural changes.

  • Documenting entries in the residents’ electronic record daily.

  • Following the supervisory chain of command with job related matters.

Additionally, staff will complete in-service and recertification courses to be knowledgeable of all policies, procedures, manuals, and work expectations.

GRC provides residential services for individuals who have struggled to be successful in the community, gives in-home support for those who transition to the community, and assists community-based providers with assessments, training, and other technical support. We strive to provide holistic treatment utilizing the multidisciplinary model in an integrated approach to service provision. A person-centered approach is our goal in assisting each individual. We rely on our professionals to share their knowledge and ideas and be instrumental in helping GRC be the right choice for Iowans in need of our services. The goal of all GRC services is to help individuals be successful in their communities.

If you enjoy working as part of an interdisciplinary team, helping to develop person-centered Individual Support Plans, while also helping individuals stabilize and return to their community of preference then this is a wonderful opportunity to consider.

Glenwood Highlights

The City of Glenwood is home to just over 5,000 friendly people in the Loess Hills of southwest Iowa. A small rural community with strong ties to the Council Bluffs and Omaha metropolitan area, Glenwood is a dynamic and welcoming place to live and work. The Loess Hills landform is an Iowa treasure that spans more than 1,080 square miles along the eastern edge of the Missouri River flood plain. This unique feature is up to 15 miles wide and 220 miles long. Bridging rural and metropolitan areas, the hills have something for everyone. Home of the Mills County Historical Museum, seven historical buildings with the largest display of Prehistoric Native American Artifacts in the state of Iowa are located here. Nearby you can find the Hillsdale Lily Garden with 159 lily varieties on an acre of land surrounded by a walking path. Glenwood is just 25 minutes from Omaha and about 2 hours from Des Moines.
